I'm curious if the exclusive GSM AT&T iPhone can be unlocked. I know there's allot of places to unlock GSM phones. I don't know how exclusive AT&T will make the iPhone. Your thoughts. Thanks. 😕

Wait and see, but if I was a betting man, I'd say not a chance in hell. European versions though, will likely sell unlocked as that is how things wotk over there

I guess we'll find out when it hits the market. I don't see how a GSM phone can be locked. There's so much software now a days you can unlock GSM and CDMA phones. Thanks for your thoughts nuckingfuts. 😉

yes, you would have to wait before at&t would unlock it... but per fcc guidelines no carrier can prevent you from unlocking. if at&t doesn't give you the unlock code you are welcome to go elsewhere.

Eh.. people thought AppleTV was going to be a "blackbox" before it was released too.. That changed in less than a day..

OSX is OSX stripped down or not.. I bet it gets cracked/unlocked in a week.. that would gain someone a ton of notoriety as the iPhone so well known..

You can't really hack an Apple. Not really any viruses. Will not be easy.

OK, let's say you unlock your iPhone. Is the other carrier going to modify thier network so you can use all of the features? AT&T is investing some big bucks to suport the iPhone. Can you really expect that "other" provider to dump money to support a phone they don't sell?

Sure, eventually the iPhone won't be an AT&T exclusive and the other carriers will have to make the changes. The good news is that by then we'll know if the iPhone is a big hit or not. I really don't expect Apple to come up with a dozen different carrier-specific iPhones. On the other hand, all it would take was a new app or two to make the change.
