Edge/GPRS question

Here are the connectivity specs for two phones:
1). Edge, GPRS, GSM 850,900,1800,1900
2). Edge, GSM 850,900,1800,1900 (No GPRS)

Is Edge and GPRS similar just different transfer speeds?

If you live in a rural area do you want both Edge and GPRS for increased data coverage?

I am trying to discover the difference between Edge and GPRS and how it applies to rural data service.
Any info would be appreciated.

EDGE is an upgrade for GPRS. They put a bolt-on unit on a tower and then you get faster internet speed provided your handset is ready for it.

You can't have EDGE without having GPRS basically.
