sim card compatibility

I am looking to purchase a new phone and sim card to replace a phone that I lost. From what I understand, Cingular uses different types of sim cards for different areas of the US (I'm in the NY area). Does anyone know how I can find out what series/type of sim card would be compatible in my area?

thanks for your help

NYC uses 19 digit sims... most other markets use 20 digit sims... upstate NY also uses 20 digit sims....

Is that the only difference between the different Cingular sim cards?
