Merger, Audiovox SMT-5600, and "must buy new phone"

So...this is a question from a thread on the Audiovox SMT-5600 page, but thought you Cingular guys might be able to answer it.

This is an "AT&T" phone, but once our AT&T contracts are "up," are we going to have to buy a "Cingular" phone to stay with Cingular? Or can we just keep using the SMT-5600?

I think the confusion stems from the Cingular Merger webpage that says that in order to switch to Cingular, you have to buy a new GSM phone from Cingular. But I tend to think that is to get everyone out of the older systems and on to GSM/GPRS, and because the SMT-5600 is already GSM/GPRS there should be no trouble keeping it.

Anyone know?

you can stay on a ATTWS "legacy" plan, but if you want to be able to take advantage of say , rollover mins, you will need to migrate to a Cingular plan. You WONT be penalized if you were to "migrate" to Cingular now Cingulkar will also still get you a phone at a discounted rate.

You dont have to get out of your old contract if you dont want to for the time being. We have been told as of this moment that if you switch you will be doing so on your own accord and you will be required to get a Cingular phone when you sign your new contract.

Again they are not requiring anyone to switch, its just for those that wish to upgrade to a newer technology (if they are on TDMA) and those that feel that maybe some of the new plans better suite them.

Personaly if I spent that kind of money on a phone like that I would at least finish out my contract with ATT. Youll still have access to the same network that everyone else does.

And of course anything that is said here or that you see is subject to change without warning ...
