switching over

In September I upgraded my gsm phone with attws and switched my tdma phone to gsm and put them on a gsm plan. the phones are LG 1150 and Samsung X426. I want to switch over to cingular because their coverage is far better in my area, but i do not want to purchase new phones seeing as i just purchased 2 new phones not so long ago. If I don't move to Cingular will I still expierance better coverage and mobile to mobile feature? Or could i switch to cingular and trade my phones in for similar phones such as the samsung x427 and LG L1200 at no cost and pay the activation fees. thanks in advance!

Yes, because you'll get the coverage of both networks.

Nope.

do you mean that cingular will not give at&t customers a discount on a new phone if they switch over until their at&t contracts are up.

No. What I mean is you'll get the same deals as if you're a new customer. The particular phones you mentioned aren't free... 😁

Here is what I have been told as to "switching" over... If you are currently with ATT, you will need a NEW Cingular phone to get cingular advantages as where if you are with Cingular already, you need to do nothing. You will get a discount for turning in your ATT phones (150.00) from what I hear, as well as pay activation. I am not sure you get a discount on a Cingular phone as of yet though.

if the att customers really do get a discount of $150 for turning in their phones...then in this market that takes care of their Early termination fee... but i haven't heard anything about this.

Its what I heard from our Cingular acct rep in the midwest market, although, they will not be receiving the "typical" discount on the phone and it sounds like they will have to pay retail for it.

Information directly from cingular:

All migrating customers are treated as standard upgrades as far as pricing. Their old phones will be collected at retail locations. They will be issued 64k SIMs to take advantage of the larger IRDB. Mailers will be sent out to encourage ATTWS customers to migrate, probably offering discounts off of phones even lower than new line pricing.

WHAT? 😳 No, no, no. IF the customer wants to 'upgrade' to Cingular, they get to end their AWS contract early with NO penalty, and get to buy a new phone at the same level as brand-new customers. The AWS phones get refurb'ed for warranty/insurance purposes.

You won't have to to get cingular phones for a while...if you want, you can ride out your contracts with the phones you just upgraded to before you upgrade again, you'll experience the same coverage as if you were using cingular's phones.

it'll be about a year (possibly more) before we require everyone to have cingular phones. And we will forgive attws commitments if you do decide to upgrade with cingular at this time.

your coverage with your x426 will not exactly be the same as the x427 from cingular, for example. Mainly because your phone will "Prefer" ATT's towers/band still. It will however ,make use of cingulars network as well, but it will not be the same as if you had a phone from cingular, or one with the new Enhanced network selection (ENS).

So in short, your coverage will get better, but the phones you use still will prefer ATT towers over cingulars. I would ride out your contracts until you are closer to the end (or until you get something from cingular in the mail where they will upgrade you to their phones and plan).

Hope this helps.
