taking my number with me (unusual circumstance)

I am planning to switch to at&t later this month, and I want to take my number with me. I know that’s not a problem normally.
However I don’t want to cancel my contract with verizon. I want to keep my plan with verizon, but get a new number for the verizon plan and take my current number with me to at&t. Is this at all possible?
I don’t want to loose my number, but i also don’t want to pay to cancel my contract with verizon.

Thanks for you help,
Kinkade

There would be a termination fee for porting your number that is under contract.

Cell companies make no sense to me.

I dont want to cancel my contract with them, but they make me because they wont let me change numbers? Thats rediculous.

There has to be some way.

Not what he's asking...

Your number has to be active to port. So if you port your number your account gets canceled. If you do a number change the number you had is gone.

Start an AT&T contract with a new number. When your Verizon contract comes out port it to AT&T. That's the only way I see.

How don't "they" make sense? Your agreement was or is with a certain number, with a certain plan. If you port your number out to another carrier, you've broken and canceled your agreement with the carrier. Porting a number is part of a agreement with carriers at the time. Sorry.

Get a second line with vzw, then a few days or weeks later switch, port the # you want to att, but if you are under contract with the # you want to port you will pay cancel fee.
Why don't you just port #, and get new with att, then you have one bill?

I love the misinformation on this website.

It's very simple, but I recommend calling Verizon Customer Service and letting them know what you are going to do, so they can notate the account accordingly.

Just have the sales rep at the AT&T store port your number normally. Once the port is complete (usually takes a few hours, you'll get a text message on your phone that says "port in or within complete"). As soon as you get that message (or if your incoming calls come through on your new AT&T phone) call Verizon Customer Service and tell them that you would like to reinstate the contract with a new number so they can waive the early termination fee (ETF).

They shouldn't give you any trouble because they are in essence saving a custom...

Just a question - will this reactivation require any contract extension?

Not when I have done it with Verizon. I specifically instructed the rep not to extend the contract and she did not.

he gets a curious rep who calls his old number only to see if it has been really "cancelled"

That wont work, the billing system wont be able to reactivate a line with a deleted number. The only way for the ETF to be waived on a port out is with a "win back" which is when a customer ports their number back to VZW after porting out.

I see in another post that you state you have spoken to a VZW rep to have it done, it would either have been years ago or been done in the billing system that was being closed out over the last year and a half by someone changing information in it that they shouldnt be changing. The current billing system now used for all VZW accounts wont be able to do it.

Kincade,

This can be done. First, You need to add a line at Verizon...put it on the 39.99 plan. Don't do a FT line, or that will extend your account another year.

Once your old Verizon number is out of contract, than you can switch it over.

Problem solved. Number ported out to AT&T, still have service w Verizon.

If you are in the Dallas area, I would love to help you.

No, that is actually retarded because then he will be paying for two lines. I don't understand how you even think this is a good idea.

Dumbass,

He wants to pay for 2 lines on 2 different carriers. Read the post again.

Vzw no....port to AT&T

Vzw no 2....keeping the VZW service.

I don't know where you are wasting your tuition money at....

You are a f***ing retard. Here is a quote of what you said:

Basically you are telling him to add a line with Verizon, and wait for his other line to come out of contract before he ports it over. Don't try and say that isn't what you are saying because I have your idiotic BS response right there. That is going to give him two lines on Verizon, which he wants one porte...

Are you not canceling your service because you don't want to pay the termination fee? I would just pay it - a lot less hassle. I pay $100 a month for cell and data service w/ Verizon. So less than two months to terminate is not terrible.

But it may require a minimum 1 year contract. At least that's how it was on the at&t side.
