NASCAR countersues AT&T for $100 million, moves to ban future telecom sponsorships

We really couldn't care less about who wins this race or that race on the NASCAR circuit, and yet we've been unable to take our eyes off of the stock car giant's ongoing legal battle with AT&T, which has just entered a new and more contentious phase this week. You'll recall that in an effort to protect Nextel's exclusive 10-year sponsorship, NASCAR officials attempted to prohibit the "new" AT&T from rebranding Jeff Burton's Cingular car -- an attempt that was thwarted in a US District Court last month. Well apparently Brian France and friends aren't too fond of watching Burton race around the t...

I'm sorry race fans, but NASCAR just made a incredibly stupid move. How often in...ever...has AT&T lost a lawsuit when it goes toe-to-toe with other organizations? It's kind of like a hands-off deal when it comes to them. You can't win!

My bet is that NASCAR loses and suffers the penalty of court fees.

Nextel isnt even a company any more sprint owns it. The only reason sprint hasnt dropped the nextel name like AT&T with cingular is b/c they would lose whats left of the 15 million rednecks left with walkie talkie service in the south . The majority of Nextel customers have either switched to Sprint Or ported Out in droves like they have in my market. Bottom Line If you want an example of how to F*** Up a merger, buyout whatever just look at what sprint has done with that company .

Sorry for the rant just dont like sprint and they flat out suck !Sprint Fanboys will even agree on this one

All I will say is to stay on topic. A contract is a contract and has any of you read it? It clearly states no other telcos besides cingular and alltel. Yes cingular and att are the same so whats the big deal I dunno. But those were the only two telcos grandfathered in. So technically speaking nascar should win this.

Have you read the lawsuit??? They are trying to get ALL wireless carriers including Alltel out by 2008. This shows how pathetic and ignorant Nascar is. Nascar loves to "level the playing field" yet monopolizes advertising? They say that ATT is purposely trying to derail Nextel? Nextel and Sprint have screwed themselves, they are run by idiots and they are suffering and this only shows it.
In a healthy competitive arena one should want competition, one should want to be the best. The funny thing is that Verizon Wireless and Cingular/ATT have played fair for the most part and view each other as competition, Sprint on the other hand goes out and tastelessly advertises bogus crap like connectile disfunction and comparing thier EV-DO to EDGE. No, not really not if Cingular had a name change due to changes inside the company. If this was a recent merger where AT&T and Cingular came together, then yes NASCAR might have a case, but not when a preexisting company does it, especially if they were "grandfathered" in.

It would be the same case when Kentucky Fried chicken changed its name to KFC, still the same company, but different name, if they were a sponsor before the name change, should they be taken off becuase of it if it were known as the NASCAR McDonald's Cup?

That's fine and all but if this goes through it will just be settled out of court. NASCAR doesn't need any more crap to deal with. I am no fan by any means, but I do watch ESPN, and it doesn't look good when one of your best marketable drivers is leaving his "step mom's" company. So for a "sport" that has been marketed towards family, this only hurts NASCAR. (Perception is everything)

Unless I'm missing something, NASCAR should be suing RCR, since the sactioning body hold contracts with the teams, not the teams' sponsors. It's true that NASCAR also has contracts with its title series sponsors and other official sponsors and has an obligation to protect their interests, but I fail to see how a name change significantly harms Sprint Nextel or NASCAR. Unless NASCAR goes to a franchise system, they should just have to cope with the fact that teams might have sponsors who compete with NASCAR's own sponsors.

Reports are coming out that the Nextel Cup series will be renamed Sprint Cup starting next season. (This move had been expected since the merger.) NASCAR's definitely looking foolish trying to disallow the Cingular name change on the #31. Talk about a bad time to make that announcement. 🤣

The pot and the kettle have met and they are both black.

This is typical of the crap with Trashcar lately. It kills me that they are trying to pinch ATT and Alltel yet Sprint can get the series renamed to the Sprint cup??? It was Winston cup a few years ago and voila, Nextel Cup is born and voila, the Sprint cup will be born. Talk about identity crises for gods sake. The poor dumb a$$e$ that are still carrying a walkie talkie have got to be confused as all hell and the demographic of Trashcar as well. Hell, if they wanted to change it to Monkey Spank Cellular and have monkeys jackin off beofre every race Nascar could probably care less as long as they get the 750 million they agreed to over tenm years.

I hope Nascar and Craptel both...

You know what my favorite part of all of this is? The ruling last month came down on a friday afternoon, and it was immediately appealed so that something could be worked out by the race, which I believe was on a Sunday. Well, the hearing that allowed AT&T to go ahead and re-brand their car was held in the judge's private living room on a Saturday morning so they wouldn't have to open up the court building!!!

I LOVE the fact that a bunch of smart rich people in suits spent their Saturday at a federal judge's house arguing over a NASCAR car's decals!
