Both David Pogue (New York Times) and Walt Mossberg (Wall Street Journal) confirm that the iPhone doesn't record video. A really strange choice by Apple on a $600 phone.
Also, both reviewers dissed how slow ATT's EDGE network was, and both had criticisms of ATT's network in general. Mossberg didn't like that the iPhone was available for only one carrier, saying essentially that if you're not in an area with good ATT coverage, it doesn't matter how cool the iPhone is (obviously); while Pogue pretty much body-slammed the ATT network:
The bigger problem is the AT&T network. In a Consumer Reports study, AT&T’s signal ranked either last or second to last in 19 out of 20 major cities. My tests in five states bear this out. If Verizon’s slo...

That aside, the 1st gen iphone is still better than any other phone out there & it will only get better. I wish it had 3G also but I say use this one till another comes out. Since Apple products hold there value you will get top dollar on eBay.
...
It is far and away not even close to being the best phone out there. Perhaps you should do some research before making statements like that.
...
good thing we have other people to tell us what to like.....
...
True.. and looking back at what they do like... *gasp* it seems to be all Verizon stuff. Weird that.. ain't it?
Seriously, I always take the bias of a report into order and this one has bias to spare. I personally have no need for the iPhone. I really don't want the iPhone.
However.. deep inside... I do 🙂 ... just because.

So keep your posts until after it is released.

Understand and agree with wait till the iphone comes out to dish on it but as for the network, you don't have to wait. It's really starting to get my attention that the company wants us to sell all this unlimited data, video services and while there may be 160 markets out there with 3G, I am in one of the states that has between one and three city's in the entire state that has 3G. So, if you are not lucky enough to be in one of these city's you are just on the slow ride of edge. 🙄

EDGE is not that bad, I don't know what you are talking about. I'm in an EDGE only area too and my 8525 breezes through downloads.
You people have it in your head that EDGE is sooooo much slower than 3G. I lived in a 3G area last year and yeah, it's f***ing awesome, but EDGE just isn't that bad.
...
EDGE in our area is great for plain media net but beyond that, it reminds me of the early days of dial up. Take a V3xx or CU500 for example, if you were in the store trying to demo the video service it would buffer, run 10 seconds and buffer again and again. Either that or the entire process would just fail. Also I have tried to use the our laptop connect demo card and some days it will run about like dial up and the next day you will have to reload a web page 3 or 4 times to get all the pictures to come due to time outs before it will load.

If dissed hard is :
" Our verdict is that, despite some flaws and feature omissions, the iPhone is, on balance, a beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer." - Walt Mossberg
and
"So yes, the iPhone is amazing. But no, it’s not perfect"
- David Pogue
Then perhaps I need to re-consult urbandictionary.com on the meaning of "dissed".. None of the "shortcomings" was a surprise to anyone..
We will see what consumers have to say over the next few weeks..
...
It doesn't matter. People just want to enjoy thier their 5 minutes of "I have one you don't" in the technology arena before the buyer's remorse sets in..
...
both reviews also said good things about the phone.
...
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this before, but maybe I just missed it. Apparently one of Pogue's (New York Times) complaints is that the operating system on the phone uses 700MB of the 4GB/8GB hard drive. If you get the 4GB model, you're really getting 3.3 GB of storage space. Compare that to a competitor where you can get a 4GB removable memory card with a true 4GB in it.
Honestly, I think the iPhone depends on the education that people have about it. It will definitely sell to the people that need to have the hottest new thing, but this phone really doesn't seem very practical to me.
...
YEah it also says in a year from now it wont be the coolest phone but will still have major limitations.
I really pitty those who have the "first on the block" syndrome. Its going to be fun watching all those text messengers on that screen. Thats the first complaint the teens will have.
HYPE sells. No doubt about it. I have lost all faith in peoples ability to think for themselves.
...
I agree that it is sad that they led with an Edge device. Not that most of the country would know the difference since 3G is only offered in City settings at the moment.
