Iphone Activation???

klaw83

Jun 27, 2007, 1:25 PM
Does anyone know exactly how this is going to work? Is the Iphone only for new customers or is it eligible for upgrades also? Is it possible that the $599 is an outright price?

No one knows how to activate yet. Training is on friday from what I have read. The Iphone is available with any two year contract on an Iphone plan. There is no "outright" pricing on the Iphone, it is only available with a contract.

What I dont understand is there is a video on the Apple website that explains how customers can take the phone home and activate it themselves through itunes...

http://www.apple.com/iphone/usingiphone/activation.html »

This makes me think that the $599 is possibly a full retail price...

I read about that and didn't get it either. i think the point was that the phone will simply not work with out an Iplan and an Iplan requires a two year contract. Not to mention the phone is strongly locked to ATT.

It is the only price for now until we learn how to unlock it then the prices will come down on the next gen.

Q. Does iPhone work out of the box?
A. No. iPhone must be activated before it can be used. iPhone includes a pre-installed SIM card for your convenience.

straight from the website. pre-installed does not mean in the box.
...
attwork

Jun 27, 2007, 8:47 PM
pre-installed also does not mean that its "built in"....just pre installed.
...
Bigbmc26

Jun 27, 2007, 8:53 PM
it does mean pre-installed in the device, not just in the box. also, if you watch the activation video on apple's website, it never asks you for the SIM number activation only the serial number from the device. interesting. never seen a gsm device activate without entering a SIM number, unless the SIM number is on the outside of the device.

yeah, strange...
...
attwork

Jun 27, 2007, 8:56 PM
or they already have the sim number thats associated with the serial number since it already comes with one.....i dont know?
...
attwork

Jun 27, 2007, 8:33 PM
i dont think the sim is "built in", i think it just comes with one in it already (which im pretty sure you can take remove).

from what ive seen there is a small pin hole that you poke with a paper clip that will release the sim card tray....

Ms.Li

Jun 27, 2007, 11:40 PM
EVERYONE, and I mean everyone will pay either $499 or $599 for the phone. That is the retail price, the "upgrade"/"contract extension" price, the business price, etc. Also everyone will be paying the full rate plan price as well. ๐Ÿ˜

The only thing that I read is that if you sell an iphone and it is DOA you can't return it for a new one, you have to mail it to applecare to get it fixed.

The other thing that doesn't make sense to me is that apple wants to sell 10 million of these devices the first year, how does it expect to meet these sales quoata's without offering a no committment price to existing customers. I think market penetration is too deep to lure in 10 million new customers.

I thought that was 10 Mil. worldwide by the end of 2008.. they really aren't shooting that high.. considering a billion cell phones are sold a year.. or something close to it..

iPhone. Only on AT&T.
AT&T and Apple have an exclusive relationship that combines a revolutionary phone with
the largest digital voice and data network.
Activation
You activate your iPhone in a whole new wayโ€”using iTunes right on your computer.
All you need is a PC or Mac, a credit card, access to the Internet and an e-mail address.
The credit approval for your AT&T service also happens on your computer. Itโ€™s part of activating
through iTunes, but if youโ€™d rather have your credit pre-approved before you leave the store, an
AT&T store representative can help you with that.
Rate Plans
To use iPhone, youโ€™ll need to sign up...
