So yes the new law is in effect.. You can not dial the phone while driving.. Big fines apply. This makes having the Iphone in your car a liability - See below -

More important is the Iphone does NOT support voice dialing which would allow for LEGAL dialing while driving..

Iphone is the only current phone in production that does not have voice dialing. It's dangerous and they should be stopped from Selling devices that are dangerous.

Here is the Law -------

Cell Phone Legislation: Don’t Drive and Text in New Jersey

New Jersey passed stronger legislation for road safety. It is against the law in New Jersey to drive and use a hand held cell phone. The legislation extends to texting while driving too:

If it is illegal to drive and dial on the phone in the first place, what good does dialing *08 do?

Why don't you call Governor Corzine. Or better yet, ask his driver who was dialing.

Every single phone, even those with built in voicedial, require at least one keypress to activate. If you can't even do that, then you can't dial any phone, not just the iPhone.

If you set *08 to a speed dial then it would take as many key strokes as using a BT headseet to activate voice dialing(1).

If by "Keypress" you mean on the phone, then you are wrong. We don't ever have to touch our phones in the car. There is one button on the steering wheel (right next to the audio controlls and cruise). And if I'm not mistaken, you can even teach the car to listen for a magic word so that you don't even have to press that one button.

If you have a bluetooth enabled car. For everyone else, there wouldn't be a difference in keystrokes. Even on most bluetooth cars there is still a button to be pushed.

Thanks for proving me right. I did say every single phone requires at least one keypress. You're talking about a car kit.

If you have a "magic word" then you're truly hands free. If you're pressing a button on the steering wheel you're still pressing a button, just a more convenient one.

A MUCH more convenient one. It's easier and safer than adjusting the stereo volume or putting the window down. And yes, if you have a car kit or headset which use the magic word, then you don't press a thing. Many BT devices have that.

My car kit has that too, but it's still not a phone function. I was pointing out that the original poster is an idiot, because this new law makes all phones illegal to dial and not just the iPhone.

I see. No problem. I guess I was just pointing out that there are ways of using the iPhone legally in your car while in NJ if you have the right equipment.

MOST IMPORTANT POINT: Don't drive, or live, in New Jersey. That state sucks. Double sucks now that you can't call people while driving.

And if that's not a huge deal, the UK requires NO phone calls AT ALL while DRIVING. Oh no!

I am amazed by the stupidity on this forum. I stopped checking it for awhile b/c it was so annoying, yet i come back and its the same thing (and not only by posters, but by moderators as well). Its disappointing - you have to sift through page after page of junk just to find any slighly useful information. This forum is a shell of what it used to be - those of you who have frequented it for some time have noticed that most of the people who provided useful information have since stopped doing so b/c they no longer c...

yeah....i mean its interesting and all that there is a law out there against the iphone, but theatermax is just being stupid. if your so freakin worried about dangerous things while driving than you need to leave the cellphone at home....and you should probably take the radio out you your car to make sure your not messing with that. actually, just ride a bike everywhere....but make sure to where your r-tard helmet and knee/elbo guards.

obviously somone is just an iphone hater/vzw fanboy.

Wow... fasci-f___in-nating...

So when did the iPhone become the only phone we carry without voicedial? I know the Razr is the only 3G phone with it and most Windows Mobile devices require the MS Voice Command software, if not the AT&T Voicedial service.

And the title of the post...??? πŸ™„

Way to command respect for a well thought out point, Corky.

I am a huge Apple Fan , I have a Imac 24 on my desk and love it but guess what ? It does what it's supposed to !!!

The Iphoney is not a phone.. It's a decent web device and a great Ipod.. Thats it.. As a phone it's crap and everyone who has one knows it..

I have my friends sitting here and it's rancid as a phone..

Yes if you do 300 mins a month then who cares. For us users who do 4000-6000 a month , it's a serious concern.

No Phone button to instantly take you to the phone screen.. Press center and then launch the phone app.. Cmon guys you know it.. It's not a phone.. It just does phone things but not well.

No voice dialing which entails status check, Number Dialing, Text to...

I don't in particularly like the i-phone and agree that is lacking in some areas and expensive. However I am not posting crazy bulletins about an issue that the iphone has, that is the same issue on many other phones. I have a samsung sync, it doesn't have voice dial built in, is it illegal also? No because of ways around that which others have explained. Obviously you just have a vendetta against the iphone and wanted to complain. Don't buy one cause its obviously not right for you and stop complaining

Our Nissan has built in hands-free Bluetooth which does not rely on the phone's ability to do voice dial. You actually teach the car your contact names and numbers. Once it repeats them back to you, it will dial them through your phone, even if that person is not a contact in your phone. It will also allow you to speak a phone number if the person isn't programed in. If our car's BT will do that, I imagine that there are aftermarket BT kits that will do the same. I've alreay talked to 2 people who have used their iphones with the Nissan system and they work great.

I agree 100%. Nearly all cell phones are Bluetooth nowadays. If your car doesn't have built-in bluetooth, spend $40 and get a headset. Otherwise, stay off the phone while driving!

Its just not a good idea period to use your phone while driving. We are all guilty of it though, but I understand why they are starting to pass laws because of this, too many car accidents and fatalities coming from people that are to busy using their cell phone instead of paying attention. I think that if they are going to enforce this law though, they really need to crack down on all the other idiots that are doing everything else but driving as well, like, brushing their teeth, reading the newspaper, blah blah. We just had a girl killed here a couple weeks ago from a kid texting and driving. No bueno ☹️

Phone records are immediate and cannot be disguised. It will be very easy to prove you were pre-occupied in a wreck. Thats why they can pass a law and SHOULD pass a law so those who do wreck while on phones actually BROKE a LAW.

A law that doesn't exixt cannot be broken.
