Even though the phones become expensive paperweights if customers quit AT&T's wireless plan, the company will still charge a $175 early termination fee, said Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., chairman of a House subcommittee on telecommunications and the Internet.
Markey described the phone as a "Hotel California service. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave - you're stuck with your iPhone and you can't take it anywhere.''
The issue arose at a hearing on whether Congress should grant the cell phone industry's wish and pre-empt states from regulating wireless phone companies. State ...

opps this was the opener for the sotry.
The Apple iPhone has enjoyed favorable reviews since its recent debut, but it came in for some rare criticism on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.
...
I thought you could still use some of the features in the iPhone without it being active. Like the mp3 player.
...
as far as we were told u cant but idk never played with the phone myself.
...
Wow, that's really lame.
...
if you don't want to sign a contract with at&t and may end up paying the $175 early termination fee just to get out of the contract go ahead and activate your iphone on a Go phone account. you are willing to spend $500 or even $600 on a phone i would think you are going to use it that way it wont be a paperweight.
...
we got a note on that, we now bust anyone who uses the iphone on a go plan.
...
"Bust them"?
What does that mean? I can say that folks here in the Central region were fully aware of that option and were not "busting" anyone for choosing that option.
...
well the note we got says they cant use it as a go phone. and were to suppend their service until they a different phone.

Wow, that sucks. at&y allows the iPhone to work on Go Plans, and then susoends their service. Looks like a law suit waitint to happen. You can't allow, then dis-allow, because you decide to. There's no agreement made.
...
It has to be on the Pick Your Plan Service and not the Pay As You Go.
...
A note from whom?
In what region are you?
...
I think it only allows it on the Pick your Plan, and not Pay as you Go. Both Go Phone, but different types.
...
That would make sense, considering you can add unlimited internet to the pick your plan.
...
colorado. it came my are site director.
...
You can add it pick your plan only and only after running a credit check first . ๐
...
i have read online (not from at&t) if your credit is bad it gives you the option to activate the phone on a go phone account. how does it give you that option if at&t does not want it to be on a go phone account i am talking about pick your plan it is basically the same thing as a regular plan without the contract.
...
if i remember right that is wht the whole thing was about, but i tring to find the damn memo we got.
...
if i recall at&t said something about the go phone activation but it is not clearly given to you through itunes so some people just put 999-99-9999 as there social and it automatically says bad credit and offers the go phone. but if you can find the memo that would be great.
...
its pick your plan, thats what i know. i am having my sup print me the memo again.
...
Where exactly did you get this information from? ๐คจ
Because if you'll do proper research you'll see that they have iphone go phone plans (pick your plan) ๐
...
So you can get away with 25 every three months as long as you don't go into a store and still use the device? I other words, if you didn't want to use it as a phone so much as an ipod and wifi browser would it continue to work if you set it up as a pic your plan and later changed to pay as you go?
