Clueless newbie looking for suggestions for best data plan for Nokia E50 and Cingular/ATT?

I may be going at this backwards, but I found the phone I wanted and bought it unlocked: Nokia E50.

I do not have a carrier but plan on signing up with Cingular/ATT.

Here's what I want to do with the phone: (1) phone calls (duh!); (2) receive POP3 email with PDF attachments (push would be nice but not necessary); (3) some very minor web surfing (like checking the looping radar weather map, maybe a Google search, etc.).

Here's what I do NOT want to do with the phone: (1) text messaging; (2) send photos; (3) VPN support not needed

I Googled this topic and came up with some messages which I really didn't understand. I'm trying to figure out which would be the best data plan for me, MediaNet, Smartmail, or a PDA plan.

Also, I wa...

unless you are trying to use bb mail you should be ok with a unlimited media net package for 19.99 a month. While the bb email would be a much better solution at 44.99 giving you true push email with attachments.

I had the e50 it is a sexy and solid phone. Mine didn't have the camera(should have paid closer attention to the ebay add.)

Good luck!

This is great info.

Am I right that when I sign up for the service, the best strategy is to order a phone which Cingular/ATT pairs with media net, harvest the sim, and sell the phone on eBay while popping the sim into the E50?

And even though I won't have push attachments, I can still get PDF attachments on POP email, right? That's ...

i know with my nokia 6682 (pretty much same os system) i was able to view attachments. it came with adobe on it. the spread sheets like excel attachments are opened via a 3rd party if i remember correctly. i might have to break that phone out again ๐Ÿคจ .

if it doesnt come with the software on the device. symbian is one of the most manipulatable softwares out there. im very sure you can find the software for it on the web.

there is an unlim. media net $19.99 or you can do the smartphone connect $19.99. either or.

hope this helps ๐Ÿ˜

I would go to a website that offers extreme discounts on a phone and maybe keep it as a backup rather than sell it on ebay.

well I don't know where you are looking, but the 19.99 for unlimited media net is an option. You should just sign up for a regular plan then go into a store and tell them you want unlimited media net for that price.

I was looking on the Cingular/ATT website under plans (additional services -- data). Maybe they discontinued MediaNet for new subsbscribers? I don't even see anything with that name.

My bad -- yes I see unlimited MediaNet under the MediaMax200 plan for $19.99.

I missed that initially because ATT has it listed under "Messaging Plans" instead of "Data Plans" and I don't do text messaging.

They make this WAY confusing with the different plans (SmartPhone, DataConnect, MediaMax), but if y'all say that's what I need, that's what I'll get!

You know how iPhone talks about the "real Internet" and not the mobile Internet? What does the MediaNet connect to? Is the "real Internet" not a good idea for small screen cell phones?

symbian OS should connect you to the internet....it doesn't matter what plan you have it is how the phone displays it....

The real internet just slows down the phone, takes longer to load without the compression that mobile internet offers... mobile internet is actually a blessing not a hinderence.. it increases battery life and speeds up your browsing time.

with my N75 i can either look at the real internet through the web browser or the mobile internet through the media net app.
