Cancelling plan. Question.
Am I better off migrating to Cingular or cancelling AT&T plan and then signing new Cingular?
If I migrate, I'm guessing I would get to keep the AT&T phone and sell it on ebay or something, although I'm not sure if the rebates would be valid after a migration.
Any idea's? Thoughts?
Thanks
PS. Same Q asked on the AT&T forum but this one seems to have more traffic.

Cancel and return your equipment and then buy cingular. If you migrate you will pay $18 upgrade fee on top of your $36 activation fee you have already been charged. IF you cancel with AWS withing the first 30 days they will credit your activation fee back and then you will just have to pay the activation fee with Cingular.
While it is true that you pay a migration fee of $18, it is also true that you are charged an activation fee of $36 but then it is directly credited back too. I speak from first hand knowledge of their systems being a Consultant working on the migration initiative.
Nonetheless, it is going to be the same thing whether you cancel your service with AT&T and then sign a ...

Oh cripe, I hadn't thought of the migration fee... d'oh! ðŸ¤
A Migration fee is the only fee being charged here. The Activation fee ( a separate fee) is waived altogether). Albeit it does appear, but then it is credited back in the same bill to zero it out.
Net Result: only $18 migration fee as opposed to signing a new Cingular Activation/Non-Migration and paying the $36 activation fee over there (no migration fee involved here).
Bottom line: You'll be charged a fee either way but the migration fee will be the lower of the two scenarios.
And what of the AT&T phone if I migrate and get a new Cingular phone? I know that if I cancel AT&T I have to return the phone or get charged for it but if I migrate and need to get a new phone, what happens to the AT&T phone?
Thanks for your help. The guys at the store don't know much, especially at non-AT&T/Cingular stores (Best Buy for example).

hmmm. Let me see if I have this straight. If I keep the plan and migrate, the $36 activation fee will be waived and replaced with a $18 migration fee? But if I cancel the AT&T and then do a new Cingular, I have to pay Cingular $36 activation fee? Correct?
