Cingular to Cut 7,000 Jobs to Trim Costs After Buyout

Cingular Wireless, the nation's largest cellular phone company, plans to cut about 10 percent of its work force, or 7,000 jobs, as a result of its purchase of AT&T Wireless, the company said yesterday.

The company, based in Atlanta, said that most of the cuts would come in administrative and managerial positions that were duplicated as a result of the $41 billion buyout, which was completed in late October. Retail outlets or customer care centers that deal with the company's 47 million subscribers would be less affected, the company said.

It hasn't began. It only was announced and of course expected.

No big suprise here. It was widely expected that the administrative and managerial staff would be some of the first to go. It was just a matter of time for it to be announced.

This does not affect front line customer support. In fact, Cingular is planning on having approximately 40,000 customer care reps in the near future.

They have 40,000 now. 25,000 cingular and 15,000 outsourced. I'm just glad I get to keep my job. I might even get a promotion. How come no one got on here when Sprint laid off 20,000 people and why did no one trashed Verizon when they laid people off?
