I just got a new SE K790a --I HAD been using an old Nokia 8390 (LOVED that phone!) with the 32k PacBell (!!) SIM.
I'd been using the old SIM in my new phone until today, when I went in to get the new SIM.
Maybe I was expecting miracles, but the reception around town is really no better than with my old SIM.
I just now got off the phone with an overly zealous AT&T rep who told me the reason I may be experiencing the drop-outs (not dropped calls), may be due to my having an unlocked phone (as opposed to all the "superior" phones AT&T has).
He said specifically that the unlocked phones don't have the programming needed to smoothly transition from one cell tower to another.
Is this true? Or does that rep need a life?
...
Almost forgot, the reception in my home IS WAY better now than with my old SIM --full bars for the most part, used to be only 1 or 2.
...
I used an Unlocked ROKR for a while that I should've kept; for call purposes, anyway.
...
it could. some phones sold overseas do not have the same programming for 850 markets that at&t software does. phones sold in europe/asia have the 850 band but not programmed to be used exclusive in that band, only assumed for roaming. the manufactures that sell them directly will usually have the phones meet our specs, but if the phone was sold for the intent on being used in other parts of the world, it could be lacking.

Congrats on the sony I love my k790a it was a great device at everything it did. I really don't think the service is much different. I got just as good if not better service with my k790 than I have with any other phone branded or non-branded.

It's a great phone, but the keypad is absolutely HORRIFIC --nearly impossible to text.
Crackberry, it's definitely an 850 phone --I think mainly used in Canada --but the question would be if I'm getting markedly better reception in my home than I did before with my old phone, would the problem he described of a rough transitions from tower to tower still exist?
...
I doubt it. I've had more trouble transitioning between towers with branded 3g phones than unlocked non branded 2.5g phones. It should be working just fine and to the fullest capabilities of the at&t network. You'll get used to the keypad unless your fingers are way to large then .....sorry.
...
So then I'm hoping what Crackberry said probably doesn't apply to the K790a.
As far as the keypad, that's what so funny --my fingers are actually quite thin, and yet I still have trouble with it.
But I suppose you're right --it's just a matter of getting used to.
Thanks.

Are you sure it is the K790a? There is a K790i variant that lacks the 850Mhz band... They look the same and I almost bought the wrong one when I was shopping for my K790a...
...
K790a --got it from Amazon.
