How Well is number portability working?

I am considering switching from Verizon to Cingular and was curious how easy it is to keep my number.

Does it take days, weeks or hours?

Also, I am curious about the GSM coverage of Cingular. Some of my friends have Cingular service, but most have phones with TDMA or TDMA and GSM. Currently in the North AL area.

as long as you have your account number with you, your outgoing calls will be on your Cingular phone by the time you walk out the door. incoming calls usually takes about 1 to 3 hours, sometimes 5 mins.
