Do I really need a PDA/phone?

I am looking for ability to keep on track with a good calendar/contacts (including putting in addresses). I am tired of carrying separate Palm device. However, I have not see a phone that wasn't a PDA that could do that. Also if I get a PDA type phone, are you required to get internet access? Thanks!

It just depends what you are going to use that PDA. If you do not want to carry two devices then obviously it would be best for you to get one PDA device and store the information in that device rather than two. Only issue is when you purchase a PDA you need to get a data plan.

Truthfully, I just want to use it as a calendar/organizer with people's phone numbers and addresses. Anything else would be okay, but not necessary. I don't see any phone out there that is not a PDA that can do that. Am I correct? Also with any PDA phone, are you REQUIRED to get the data plan? Thanks! I have also seen a lot of mixed reviews of Treos and am a little gun shy.

The treos are horrible. You are in a tough position I think. Because you obviously don’t need the pda phone but just want to have it for convenience because you don’t want to carry two devices. It is a mix picture. Yes you are required to get a data plan.

You are only required to get the data plan if you want to get the mail in rebate back. Otherwise you are wasting your money every month. Look towards any windows mobile device such as the samsung blackjack or at&t 8525/tilt(coming asap) and you can do all your scheduling through it. You can also do it through the blackberries as well. These devices are probably the most convenient to accomplish this, but you can also use the organizers on phones like the 6126/6555/n75. All of the above phones are also ready to sync with outlook or other PIM programs out of the box(you would need to purchase a data cable for all nokias but n75) to allow you to sync your schedule without the hassel of punching in your appointments through the device itself.

I've been talking with the AT&T folks about upgrading to a Treo. They told me you have to get the data plan or you'll get charged for a lot of data access you aren't even aware is happening. And, for some reason, unlimited data for a Treo is $40 per month while it is $20 for non Treo/PDA phones. What's up with that?

That is true. The reason why there is a difference is because Treo and the like devices charge AT&T a certain amount so that way that AT&T can try to re-coup those costs. It is also expensive to put all the necessary protocols and services onto those Treo type devices. Onto non-Treo devices probably regular cellular devices not PDAs cost less. It is like that with everything. You can also say the same thing with regular devices and the pc-card with data plans and tethering.

You don't have to. If you don't access the internet you won't get charged. You can put a block on your account so your phone can't access the internet. Some reps might say you "have" to get the data plan so they get the feature sale.

Well then the right decision is to get a data plan. To save money and to receive an unlimited data package.

yeah I tell my customers to get it so they get the rebate back but most of them end up cancelling the data plan after getting the rebate and since they don't need it so I get charged back. No Bueno.

You are not required to get a data plan to get a TREO, etc. The device is just more expensive (no mail in rebate).

The treos are a love hate relationship. Some people (like you) might really hate them and some just love them.
