iphone contract
Can someone explain this to me? Lets say at this point I do not have service with AT&T/Cingular.
My understanding is you purchase the iphone (8Gig) in the box through at&t or an apple store for $399 (flat rate for new or old customers?).
AT&T doesn't hook it up for you - you bring it home and hook it up to AT&T service yourself through itunes.
At this point you are in a 2 yr contract.
If a new iphone comes out in a year and I really want it, can I get it even though I have another year left on my contract? This goes back to my question at the top.. would the price of the phone be a flat rate for new and old customers, or more expensive?
Thanks in advance for the info
...
It's a flat price to all. New, current, and renewing customers all pay the same price. Even people under contract can renew for the iPhone.
If a new one comes out and you're still under contract you can probably buy it and activate it anyway, just like with this iPhone.

So basically the main difference is that apple or at&t do not give a discount on this phone.
This makes it much more attractive to upgrade while in contract rather than waiting for your contract to be up to get the discount.
interesting.
...
You can do this with any phone only you have to sign a contract with the iphone.
...
Yes, but no matter what they wont give a discount on the iPhone.
...
yep... they say the contract is for the discount on service, not discount for the equipment because it is expected that the iphone will use more data than a pda and pda plans are 39.99 and 29.99 for blackberry.
...
I wish all phones were like that.
...
I wish people just bought their phone outright and the only reason to get a contract was for free service promos.
...
If only the HTC Tilt were like that.......
