AT&T Asks CA Wildfire Victims If They Remembered To Pick Up Satellite Receiver As They Fled Their Burning House

http://consumerist.com/consumer/videos/att-asks-ca-w ... »

When this Azola couple got back from their honeymoon, they had about an hour of matrimonial bliss before being forced to flee as their house was engulfed in flames. So you can understand they had some things on their mind other than the status of their AT&T | Dish receiver as they ran for their lives. When they called to cancel service, the customer service rep asked if they had "remembered to pi...

I agree. Great coverage but horrific customer service. They double charged me when I first became a customer and the supervisor gave me hell trying to tell me I had to do this and that!!! BULLS**T!!! 😁 I was about to leave before I even started 🙂 They really need to work on their customer service BIG TIME!!!!!!!!

The equipment is still owned by Dish Network. I had to buy the demo equipment directly from Dish Network when I outfitted my store displays.

You want to criticize AT&T for not offering to eat the $300 fee they get charged from Dish fine. Considering my family has been dealing with those fires first hand (first responders and personal loss) I agree something needs to be offered.

Some sort of alternative should happen but it would take both AT&T AND Dish to cooperate on this matter. Perhaps delayed billing for the equipment (a reasonable time for insurance, and yes most policies cover property such as this) or if the customer chooses to restore/relocate their service a reduced amount for the equipment. But unless Dish is willing to c...

at&t made their position clear already to pay up, apparently they did not (or felt no need to) consult their "partner" on the matter.

Apparently the at&t supervisor felt the same way.

Hmmm, I wonder who the payee of the check would be?

🤣

Wow I just real...

Nice to live in a paper world.

As I travel back home to see if our family home has burned to the ground your genious comments will be foremost on my mind.

Way to take advantage of a situation here. Make sure and scrape that rock-scum from your shoes before you step on anyone else for your own purposes.

Even though it's billed through at&t, when you call in you're still talking to Dish CS. Dish are a bunch of hard @sses.

I used to have their service before I signed up for U-Verse, and when I cancelled they started calling everyday (frequently after 2am) to check and see if we'd mailed back our receivers yet. Of course we hadn't, because they hadn't sent us the box to ship them in yet, but that wasn't their concern. In fact on their last threatening phone call they informed us that if they hadn't received the dishes by a specific date they'd bill us for it. The boxes finally arrived two days after that. When we called to see if they'd billed us, they said no. When we asked why they'd been harassing us if they only just now send th...

I don't believe so.

They offer it under the at&t brand name and even call it the at&t homezone receiver in both advertising and the terms of service.

On the wireless end of things, Cingular (now AT&T) has certainly been known to make accommodations for disaster victims. This was particularly true with Hurricane Katrina. Anyone who had a billing address in certain zip codes got an automatic credit to their service (due to widespread outages). Reps were given fairly broad discretion for granting further credit for areas where outages lasted longer. Receivables Management was given much broader than normal lattitudes for payment arrangements and automatic extensions were automatically granted in the worst hit areas.

.. What possible logic could you come up with for a company to waive an equipment fee for a customer canceling service and not returning the equipment or paying for it, regardless of what happened to it?

If AT&T took the loss and didnt make the customer pay for it, the customer could still make an insurance claim for it and thus the customer gets paid and AT&T loses...

If the customer's insurance doesnt cover everything that was in their home, they picked a really crappy policy and that is too bad. It isnt AT&T's fault that their house burned down and they didnt take a policy to cover it.

I bet you think that if their bank should just waive the remaining morgage payments if they didnt have coverage too, dont you?

Notice the fire victims called the company to cancel, proper protocol is to ask about the returning of the equipment. Dish or AT&T did not call the victim to ask about the equipment. Had the victims not called in, AT&T would be none the wiser.
