How is Cingular Going To Convert SunCom?

I was told that SunCom in Southwestern VA will be changing to Cingular by the end of Q1 at the very latest. My question is how will current SunCom customers convert to Cingular with the phone they already have? For example, the HipTop II (Sidekick II). Will that still be useful on the Cingular network? Will Cingular be getting the HipTop?

they'll most likely be treated just like AT&T cust's are everywhere else in the US. They'll probably be offered a chance to migrate and get a new phone. No we won't be getting the hiptop. But the GSM network is still there, so conversion shouldn't be too much of a problem, much like here in NC, an unlocked phone should still work on our GSM network. However if I recall a lot of HipTop II users have them for internet and the like....that'll be hard as Cingular doesn't support it. We won't have the proper settings to transmit.

So there would be no way to use the HipTop's data functionality (AOL IM, internet, email) on the Cingular network when its converted? If not why not? Dont take that as a smart @$$ remark but I really am curious.

basically it comes down to having the right software and net protocols. Since we don't support the HipTop we don't have those protocols listed. There's a possibility that they run on the same protocols as some of our other stuff so check with Tech support and see if they can send the settings OTA. If you can get the HipTop unlocked and we can send you the settings then it'll work fine. But you'll have a hard time going to Cingular for any troubleshooting since it's not a supported model.

The way that it works is simple we at aws did it for other companies customers we bought out, like paradigm and worldcom,

they will swap out your phone for a comparable phone and give a comparable plan to what you have, they will also without a contract, or if they can convert your plan over they will with your promotions and your contract and your phone 1 of these 2 WILL HAPPEN!!!!

I'm with suncom(chas. SC) and i was curious how cingular is going adapt my "unlimited" plan to any of their rate plans, or would they honor my contract until it is over and then let me go to month-to-month basis.

you would have to change to a regular rate plan... since we do not offer any unlimited plans...

No, sorry you will lose the plan for unlimited minutes. What they will do is give you a comparable in price and the available promotions, and they will load your serials numbers for you and other suncom customers into the database so you can use the same phone.

They will turn around and release youy from your contract when they switch you.But if you need anything like a phone discount or different plan from what Cingular gives you ,you will then be required to sign on to a new contract through Cingular.

You won't keep the suncom plan you are on since cingular never offered to you, and you weren't bought, suncom "traded" you and others for snother cingular market.

The South Carolina Market is not involved in the swap with Cingular. Cingular is getting SunCom's VA network and customers and Suncom is getting the AT&T customer's in NC as well as dissolving the non-compete clause that existed.

your unlimited plan will be vaild until your contract runs out. cingular (its funny the reps on here dont know this yet.. ?) will be grandfathering your plan until the end of the contract you had with us, and then you'll need to change to one of their plans if you'd like (or cancel since there would be no contract and no etf).

weird. i work for suncom, and thats what we are advising our customers. with our new AT&T customers, we tell them basically what you said.. about providing plans similiar or better to what they had before (or they have 20 days to release from their contract)... but you can't get anything close to 'similar' when you're talking about unlimited minutes. Our managers (at least at the call center I work for) advised us the agreement called for the unplans sticking until the customers contract expired.

but i guess you can guess as you wish.. things (like dates for when this ish happens.. its not happening march 1st regardless of what their site says, its happened in some places already).

I believe you said you are a Suncom Customer in Charlston SC, if so, you don't have to worry about your plan as you will stay a Suncom Customer. Cingular traded AWS assets in NC and SC to Suncom for their assets in VA. If you have Suncom then nothing will change!!
