No other carrier uses or used GAIT technology. Why would you want one unlocked?

In defense of that one, even though she has no intention of unlocking it, my mom has a 6340i, and is holding onto it with an iron fist until the very bitter end.

Also in those same regards, people unlock their phones for more reasons than just wanting to leave their current provider and go to another. In this case it would not be appicable, so I don't know what the intentions are, but international usage. It's cheaper to use foreign pre-paid cards than roaming with your U.S. service, if you are willing to put up with the slight inconvience. However, again, in this case it wouldn't be appicable, as the 6340i is a GAIT phone, and doesn't have the right type, nor frequency bands to work internationally. Also Cingular/aws were to my knowledge...

Why are you wanting to unlock it?

I was told by CS that if I got a new phone with cingular this phone would be inoperable and even if I put the new sim they would give me with the new phone I would get, the old 6340 would not work at all. I thought if I unlocked it I could use a new sim gsm only sim card with it.
They also told me even if I switch to a GSM only plan and kept my 6340 I would not get charged for it when it picks up any analog or TDMA signals, and some parts I go to frequently only have TDMA coverage. Hope this helps explain things a little, is my thinking skewed?

It does, yes.

Well, I'm not quite sure how things work now, I'm an x-cingular rep, current T-Mobile rep, but I was in the game when cingular first released the 6340 series, and GAIT, also when they started the tdma-gsm conversion.

At that time, if you converted from tdma-gait, there were special "gsm codes" added to your existing calling plan to allow for gsm use combined with tdma, and alalog, and the plan's, though expensive, were pretty sweet. Talk about the largest coverage area, wow!

To my understanding now, cingular is not going to bump you off your plan, but would make it difficult if you ever wanted to change gait plans, if you needed more minutes, etc...If you switch to a gsm only phone, you can kiss your gait service goo...

Things have changed a bit. There may be an incompatibility between the 64k sims and your 6340, however you can now put a GAIT phone onto a GSM plan. There are no problems. We just need to put the IMEI from your phone onto your account also. Instead of being tagged as TDMA/GAIT, it's now referred to as GSM/GAIT. You will have all the benefits of the GAIT coverage as well and the minutes and familytalk capabilities of our GSM nation plans. Just go into your local store and have them update your account and change your price plan, or call customer service and slap them around until they do it for you.

if the ESN is taken off your account at cingular, a GAIT phone will work like a regular GSM phone. It's always been that way. CS just didn't know it.

That would only give you the GSM coverage area, right? The coverage area is what held back most of my customers, this new option gives them the same GAIT coverage area.

On another note, oil doesn't run a phone like water does.

No option is gonna give you the GAIT coverage on a GSM phone, even with the 64k SIM and a ENS handset.

I was speaking of GAIT coverage with a GAIT phone on a GSM plan. You get the rates of the GSM plans, but the GAIT coverage area.
