Hi, I'm currently an ATT customer and have been thinking of upgrading my phone (Nokia 6800) since it's acting funny and switching over to Cingular. Thing is, I'm in CT now, will be in OR next month, and my phone # is a Portland, OR. If I went to something like a BestBuy here, and got a new phone, would I be able to get customer service out in Portland at another Best Buy? Or should I just wait 'till I'm out there? I also work for a company with a FAN with ATT, do I get similar discounts from Cingular?
TIA!
...
you will get the same discounts with cingular. from what i understand, yes you do need to wait until you get back to Portland to have the cingular phone activated unless you want to do an over the phone through the mail transaction, which i don not recommend.
...
Or you can call 1-866-243-6273. This is our care for people with buisness sponsership accounts. They can do it national and fedex you out the phone (unless you are a US Postal service. then they have to send it US postal). also i don't think the stores can do migrations for people on sponsership accounts but don't quote me on that. Megs should be able to tell you if they can do that as she's a store rep if i'm not mistaken.
...
we can submit for your discounts here (at the company store), generally the discounts on the phones don't seem to be worth it, but the monthly service discounts are definately worth it.
You will probably end up at the store anyway, after you get the phone in the mail, that is always what happens.
...
Can you activate the phones that have been migrated over the line? or do you just call the activation number for the customer?
...
all cust service has to do is put in the sim number to activate the phones. for security reasons they send phones that aren't active. so it should be really easy to activate them over the phone, but to the average customer it doesn't seem to be.
...
The problem is the orange account isn't built untill the customer calls the activation number and agrees to the T&C. So they just call the activation number and 15 mins later the phone activates...or so they tell us.
...
can't sell the customer phones without an account first, right?
now you have me confused.
...
sorry i'm talking about Migrating customers from blue to orange. Not about new activations sorry. I think we got confused.
...
they need new equipment to migrate.
...
Yes. But when we migrate them from blue to orange the orange account doesn't get built untill after the customer calls the activation number and agrees to the T&C. That's what i've been told anyway. CSE team is very limited untill the customer agrees to the T&C because they can't even manualy activate the phone because they don't have an account to put the SIM number in.

I have experienced this first hand. If you have a FAN discount on a family plan, on ATTWS the discount applies to all lines. On a Cingular plan, you can only apply it to one of the lines.
...
see that sucks! we had a family of four porting over from verizon and the att store offered to waive their activations, all of them. we are now the same company but still competing?? ridiculous.
and of course, we couldn't match the free activation offer, so we lost four news to ourselves. cingular doesn't care, they are news for them no matter what.
...
mmm...I feel sorry for that family. I'm pretty sure that the AWS store can't wave the full activation. but they will only get charged one activation for all 4 phones...
