850 Mhz or 800 Mhz?

Not too long ago, I upgraded to a Siemens S56 phone. Love it! It's got everything I need - bluetooth, speakerphone, etc. Shortly thereafter it was discontinued because it was on the 850 band & ATT was moving to the 800 band.

Phonescoop says that the terms 800 & 850 are interchangeable.

To make matters more complicated, Cingular's website shows quite a few phones on the 850 spectrum. So, is there really a difference between 800 & 850 and if so, wouldn't you think Cingular's 850 would be the predominant frequency going forward?

Thanks in advance for your opinoins!

It's all a technicality. 800 is the same as 850. 850 is just more specific. 800 is the traditional mhz referred to, but 850 is becomming more common. Cingular/aws have a split 850/1900 mhz network here in the U.S., so the large majority of their phones have to support both so you can use all the coverage available they have here.

They discountinued it because ATT moved to the 1900 Mhz band not the 800. 800 is accually 850.

The S56 supports both 850 & 1900 - I wonder why it was discontinued? Hopefully just commercial reason, not a tecnical or service related one. Whatever, I'm going back to using it!

Wha? 😕 Who told you that? 🙄

It's just not true. AT&T Wireless was originally 1900-only when they first launched GSM, then they phased in GSM 850 in addition to the 1900. There was never any "other" 800 band that AT&T Wireless had anything to do with.

So at some point AT&T did phase out GSM phones that didn't have 850, but obviously that doesn't apply to your S56. I think the S56 was phased out simply because it was old.

Of course I believed Phonescoop!

Thanks for the details, very enlightenging. I work in the tech industry, and can understand how inconsistent terminology can create confusion.

FYI, I was told that 800 was different than 850 by one the ATTWS tech support in their chat room last week. I don't see why bother with the misleading information? If it was time to phase out that handset to make room for a new one, that's okay with me. If there's a quality issue, that I would like to know too. Whatever, I'm just relieved not to have to purchase a new handset!

Thanks again for your help!
