I am looking to switch from Alltel to either AT&T or Verizon. I am thinking of doing a 30 day AT&T trial from mid December through January. I will be traveling from NC through VA to West VA and into DC. Also out to Seattle and the adjoining area. I hope this would give me a good idea of how the network really is? Other than fees for calls, texts, etc., what do I have to pay for cancelling? I am thinking of a Tilt or an iPhone and a Curve or Pearl for my wife?
Also any input on coverage in the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Asheville, NC areas? Please no Verizon trolls. I know your network is supposedly the best, but the phones don't impress me.
Thanks for all input.

If you cancel within three days, no fess. If you cancel between 4 and 30 days you don't get your activation fees back, that's it.
...
You will also owe a pro-rated amount of the rate plan. For instance, if you keep the phone 10 days on the $39.99 rate plan, you will owe about $10 plus tax for the service. But no early termination fees apply if you cancel within the 30 day period. Just be sure that if you purchase the equipment from a store, to return it to the store within that time period.

As mentioned in the original post he was aware of those charges.
...
Which is why I hadn't mentioned them, but thanks for the effort J.

I from Fayetteville and have been to Chapel Hill/Raleigh/Durham plenty of times and at&t works GREAT there and in my hometown. I even get signal in the country parts of NC 🙂I dont know about Asheville. I had Alltel all of 2 weeks 🙂 I dont regret leaving 🙂

I lived in Chapel Hill for a year before moving to Raleigh. AT&T here! All customer service will say is that I need a new phone. Yet when I travel back to Richmond, VA, Washington D.C., New York City, and recently to Dallas, TX, and Little Rock, AR, my same phone worked flawlessly and didn't drop a single call while I was in each of those areas.
I drop calls w/ every single call here in the triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Research Triangle Park). While in many stores, I can't use my phone unless I stand at the front of the store by the doors.
From what I understand, co-workers with 3G phones get better reception.
If you look at AT&T's coverage map (http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/B 2B.html) you'll see that there's a l...

Thanks a lot for your input. I really like the Tilt, but for reception issues I am afraid I will end up with Verizon and their hideous version of the HTC 6800. I think I will still try a 30 day trial, but I am quite interested to see the results. I had Cingular about 6 years ago in Wilmington, NC and the service lacked there.

If you try Verizon first, and it doesnt work for you, then you port out your number to ATT, they will pay your months bill, including act fee.
Im not trying to troll, just a way to find out how well Verizon works, at possible no charge.
...
Thanks for the help guys. Got a grad school break in December so will try one or both services during that time. One more question. Is the Tilt that big an improvement over the HTC6800? I will most likely use medical apps, really like voice dial, but internet isn't that big a deal. It is practically useless on my 6700.

As wfine81 mentioned you could try Verizon first or try Verizon and AT&T at the same time. That would truly give you the best comparison. Considering your wife is open to a curve and Verizon has Blackberry you could try hers with them and try the Tilt with us. If I remember correctly the iPhone has restocking fees and a lower return policy so you might not want to use that as your trial. I would also recommend buying your phone from an Agent as they might be willing to give you an extra discount on a Curve if you later choose the iPhone instead for yourself. If you choose to keep AT&T and switch your wife to them find a willing agent and follow these steps:
1. Return the Tilt and order an iPhone. The agent would still be paid on tw...

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I hadn't thought of a simultaneous trial, probably because it makes too much sense. Would you recommend an official AT&T store, or is an authorized agent as likely to work out a deal? Can you also cancel the data package after signing up if it isn't needed. I don't use the data on my Alltel PPC6700 and that works for me.
...
As far as the data package the dealer ( I would) will probably require a secondary agreement if he is willing to offer additional discounts based on that subscription. I make deals based on the revenue but can legally require said discount be paid back if you take off applicable features. You only need to keep them for six months for him to keep his money. As far as the data package for the tilt, switching to an iPhone would delete the package anyways (iPhone is a different package the dealer cannot add) and the dealer should take that into account.
You just need to find a dealer where the owner is in the store or where he allows reps to make deals. Once you do they will take care of you long term.
COR locations usually a) aren't...

I have to disagree with texaswireless. Of course my experience comes from a corporate side, so I will probably be bias just as he is from an agent side. (1st) Corporate reps are able to make deals that I think are better than agents. When I was a cor rep we were always giving out extra $50 rebates or getting fees waived for customers. I was also able to get customers upgradable much sooner than agents would be able to. Whenever we had people come in wanting to price match, we could almost always help them out. (2nd) Because cor reps have better benefits and pay than agents, they tend to stick around longer. So if you're talking about "a long term" relationship I don't think you will find one at an agent, unless you are dealing with the owner...

Even though I work for an agent, I agree with you. The COR stores can murder our pricing lately.

but don't tell this prospective cus that he will get superior service from an agent, because that is usually not the case.
First you agree this is your perspective, then you state this?
You could not give away a free Curve and you know it. MOST agents provide good service just as MOST COR reps. SOME agents suck and SOME COR reps suck too.jj
...
texas, hey yes this is my perspective and I'm pretty sure I'm right. I was able to get approvals for price matches from websites like wirefly, letstalk and walmart, so yes I have sold free curves and many other data devices with service. I do agree with you that there are sucky cor and agent reps, but if this guy wants a good deal, he should shop at a cor store for reasons stated in my previous post.
...
I am not talking about a price match, I am talking about being creative with pricing. You cannot go to your manager and say, "I want to give this guy a free curve, tilt, because he wants to buy an iPhone which is unsubsidized for his second line. Your manager would laugh you out of his office.
...
OK I don't understand what you are trying to point out. So you are saying give the curve, tilt whatever free without service/contract because he is getting an iphone? Agents wouldn't do that either, cause they pay so much for the equipment.
...
Please re-read what I said. You do not have the authority to make deals for the sake of making deals. You have strict guidelines with which you are allowed to discount/pricematch.
WE don't.
...
I have re-read your post, and yes cor stores have the ability to close a sale. Because the company buys the equipment in such large quantitys, most agents cannot even come close to competing with price matching or deals that they can make. Get real, you as an agent know this, move on.
...
Good to know you have such a vast knowledge of agent distribution.
...
You let me know next time you can offer a free tilt when a customer wants an iPhone for their second phone, cool?
...
Piece of cake, but like I said earlier, make it a cor store. Welcome.
...
Just as a heads up, I'm an agent. And our current sale is: Any phone free after mail in rebate with a two year contract. I'd like to see a COR store do that. Even better, people come in for us to price match a COR store, and I laugh. Buy one get one A737, sure, that's an extra $50 for us.
...
texaswireless thanks for all the great ideas. I am in Grad school at Duke so either Durham or Chapel Hill will be fine. The Southpoint mall is close, but the last time I was in there they only had dummy phones. It was quite frustrating to have to use the reps personal phone to see how it actually worked.
