It's a file size thing. Most MMS systems are limited to 95-100 KB per message, which works out to about 15 seconds max of video.

I haven't heard much about that limit being extended. Someone's probably working on it, but I don't know if many operators will adopt it for existing GSM systems.

What will probably happen is that extended video clips will be available only on WCDMA/UMTS (3G) systems. That's something Cingular is working on deploying.

Really? That's pretty cool. I didn't know that.

Most phones are limited to 100 KB, though.

Yeah, I love the MMS Cap w/ cingular.. I should also point out some phones have the option to change the vid length... the V551 for example can be changed from 15 Sec to the MAX being how much memory you have left in your phone... of course you can't send anything bigger than 300K via MMS...

Can you actually send a 290 KB video via MMS, though? I thought phones like the V551 and 6230 couldn't send an MMS larger than 100 KB, regardless of the network...

it would appear not. i have a moto v551 and when i use the default cingular settings for mms i only get 5-6 secs of record time the files average 89-90 KB. i tried setting the video length to MMS and it does record longer but my phone will not give me any options to send it. only store.

Cingular's MMS settings will only allow for a maximum file size of 100kb's to be sent per the MMS standardization process. It does not matter what phone you use, the MMS system will not allow anything more than that.

Sorry I was unable to reply to this earlier... But the 300KB is actually based on the limits of the handset... The network itself can support up to 300KB... It will be whichever is less... I'll e-mail the info to you Rich.

It is dependant on the Handset... If the Handset is capable of 290KB then yes... The Network will allow up to 300KB or the handset's MAX, whichever is less.

This is not true in the Washington/Baltimore Market as the cap is 100kb per MMS session. I have a 6820 and it can record a minute and a half of video but it will only send a clip of 100kb's.

hey speck do you have any direct experience with actually trying to send a recorded video message longer than 100kb? i use service in west TX and can only send a video clip of 90-100kb. even when i tried to record longer i am not given the option to even send the message.

It is based on the limitations of the handset as well... A handset may be able to record a vid bigger than 100kb, but if the handset itself is not capable of sending anything over 100kb it will not be able to do so... if the handset is capable of sending a vid up to 300kb then the network will allow it...

Keep in mind my post has always stated that the network would allow up to 300kb...

i'm not disputing that the network will allow up to 300kb. i do understand that but have you personally been able to test this as being true. you know what they say about everything looking good on paper and all.

i'm not trying to pick a fight or anything i just want to know if you or anyone has any definite firsthand experience of whether this is actually true. and how is it supposed to be known which phone(s) are capable of sending the larger video messages?

There's no list which phones can and cannot... Not even phonescoop has that info, unfortunately. This is what the company's policy is on MMS, like when the company says GPRS does not go against your minutes... It is what the company says. It's what we go by.

No, I have not personally had an opportunity to test w/ a handset that allows more than 100kb.
