Using Wi-Fi on an unlocked phone

Whats going on, recently purchased the new nokia n81 unlocked phoned. I don't have any ATT internet data plan, but the phone does have wifi on it. A few weeks ago ATT told me that if I use the wi-fi on any of their phones without a data plan, I would get charged per KB downloaded.

Is this true? I don't see how they could charge me for using my own internet source, but maybe I'm wrong.

So basically, If i use my wifi without a data plan, are they going to charge me?

Doesn't surprise me you would be told that. Cell phone sales is just above used car sales in public perception for a reason.

This is why I buy my phones off line and do not bother with contracts. You can use a WiFi pho...

The rep was telling a half truth. If you use an at&t wifi hotspot and aren't paying for a wifi package, you will get charged per kb. If you are at your house or at any other wifi spot that has free access then you won't be charged. If you want to avoid getting charged go to a store or call care and tell them you want browsing disabled on your account this way you will avoid anypay per use charges for internet. How do you like the n81? I really want the new n82!

The n81 is real good so far; it was too expensive, but ATT's phones aside from the blackberry and iphone are pretty much garbage. They also refused to sell me the blackberry 8820 or iphone without a data plan.

So, i found the n81 and decided to not care about the extra few $$$ i paid. The battery life seems to be real good so far and the music player is nice.

I wanted a combination of 3.5mm headjack, good battery life, good music player, and good phone. ATT did not sell any phone that suited my needs so I decided to buy the n81.

Cool, I'm a huge proponent of buying unlocked phones. I loved all my sony's and nokias I have used in the past plus when you throw in the settings wizard built in there is really no reason to use a branded phone if you can afford an unlocked one.

understand that when you buy a blackberry if you dont get a data package you will not be able to send MMS or access the internet unless you just us WIFI...thats the reason why your blackberry will say data connection restricted on the phone...as for the Iphone...in order for the phone to work on at&t's network you have to have the 20,30, or 40 dollar feature plan...but that Nokia kicks as I want to get the N95 when we start selling it
