Unlock my V3 RAZR!

FoneLink

Dec 23, 2004, 8:24 AM
I just received my V3 yesterday that I purchased from an authorized Cingular internet retailer and to my surprise, it asked for a subsidy code when I put in my T-Mobile sim. I do NOT plan on using it with T-Mo, but I have about a day before my number gets ported to my new Cingular account. I am disappointed that this phone is locked considering that almost everyone else that has a V3 is unlocked. I travel a lot internationally and it is important for me to have an unlocked phone. I never thought for one second that this phone would have been locked. If I call Cingular customer service and ask for them to provide me with the subsidy code to unlock this phone, what are the chances that they will comply? I have a newly activated Cingular ...

Your chances are none, they have taken ATTWS policy of not unlocking them and made it their policy.

Was that something done very recently? Because almost everyone that owns a V3 that posts on this forum has the unlocked version.

You must have different policies then the rest of us then Debit. Policy in CSP says you must either have either been on service for 90 with good standing (zero balance) or have paid full price and be able to show proof of payment in full for the phone and Cingular will unlock your phone for you. Unless you have other information that I don't that seems to be the Cingular policy on unlocking phone. Is it not encouraged and not available for blue phones.

Funny, I thought we don't unlock at all for domestic calling, but all tri- and quad-band phones ARE unlocked for use internationally...

They have to request the unlock code... They are not sold unlocked... if they are it's a fluke.

That used to be true but... All Cingular devices are subsidy locked as of 11/01/04. Prior to 11/01/04, GSM and GPRS tri and quad devices that contain at least one International Frequency (900 MHz or 1800 MHz) are not locked. Keep inmind that is devices manufactured after 11/01/04.

Not true Cingular just unlocked my T237, so my friend can use it with T-Mobile. All I had to do was fax to them the receipt of purchase to prove that I paid for the phone. The tech rep told me that if I paid for the phone and I want the phone unlocked that they have to do it.

This policy applies to all legacy Cingular markets and to all new combined company Cingular (orange and blue) markets. This policy only applies to Cingular branded devices (i.e. the device was an authorized Cingular device with a Cingular branded logo).

AT&T Wireless branded devices are excluded from this policy and will follow existing AT&T Wireless SIM lock policy guidelines. AT&T Wireless SIM Lock policy guidelines are available from 'blue' call center support representatives.

As of 11/01/04 all Cingular devices will be Subsidy Locked
From 2001 to 10/31/04, only domestic devices were subsidy locked (850 MHz and 1900 MHz radio frequencies). International tri and quad band devices were unlocked. Tri and quad band devices were those ...

Thanks, that answered my questions.

After my contract terms are completed and I don't a have a balance on my account, I can call Cingular Tech support and they will provide me with the unlock code for my phone.

No. You only have to wait for 90 days if you want to unlock it for international travel. You may get resistance from Care though. It's not a very widely known policy.

Thanks for the info. I'm not that disappointed now. I can handle waiting the 90 days.
