Unlocked v600

Someone I know purchased an AT&T V600 on e-bay and wants to use it on Cingular's network. I changed technology for him and inserted his sim card and it said to insert sim, then it said contact service provider. We tried Motorola's customer service but there was no help. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what to do now. I was under the impression that all gsm motorola's are unlocked. Does that apply to Cingular GSM Motorola phones only? Thanks in advance for your help.

No. all AWS phones are locked. Some of the Older Cingular World phones were unlocked but as of nov 1, 2004 all Cingular phones are locked also. I got bad news. Unless he has a legasy AWS account then he can't get that AWS phone activated. Some third party dealers will unlock phones but they will cost and you will have to find them yourself. Go talk to local dealers and they sometimes know of electronic stores that will unlock phones.
