Is this a handset issue or AT&T issue?

First of all, I have switched my lines to AT&T, and am free from Dobson / Cellular One.
I opted for the Samsung SLM (SGH-A747) on my main phone number. I beamed some mp3 songs to the phone to use as ring tones. When I selected one to use, the phone said the file was too big.
I didn't have this issue with my Sony Ericsson 580i I had with Cellular One, so I am wondering if this is a handset issue or AT&T restriction.

do you have att branded phones, if so they set the phones to only be able to do 300kb for ring tones, cingular branded phones do 600kb. this is what is being talked about on howardsforum for att phones.

Its a phone thing, not ATT. Some phones have size restrictions on the file you use for your ringtone. I used the Blackjack for awhile, and the file size had to be under 300kb to be used as a ringtone. Different phones have different settings.

But it is at&t who sets these restrictions. If you buy one unlocked there is no size restriction. Go to www.zedge.net and you can make your own ringtones and make them whatever size you want.
