So, I'll be back in the US/AT&T after being roaming overseas for more than 18 months. My question/concern is: will my phone work properly after being outside the network for so long? (You know, the whole going from Cingular to AT&T alpha tag thing)

The only phones I have noticed some issues with is the nokia 6230 and 3220.

I wasn't really talking about the phone, but the SIM cards. I have two lines with AT&T, and those SIMs were not within the network when the alpha tags were updated. I guess, what I'd like to know is: will the SIMs get the update as soon as I turn them on, or will I have to ask for the update to be sent to me?

I guess only trying will tell. Most updated automatically but there are still a few lingering with the cingular alpha tag. You may want to get new sim cards anyways there were reports of coverage issues with those using the older cingular SIM cards when they were trying to update the alpha tags.
