Clueless on Smartphones. Help!

My friend from work is planning on getting her first cellphone with AT&T. She really wants a smartphone to keep her life organized and together, I guess 🙄 . She asked me for advice and now I'm here cause I have no clue and have never owned a smartphone.

So I'm here for help. Any brands that are decent and get good call quality? Does she have to get a data plan with it? What do those run? I have no clue what else I should ask, so any info that anyone can give me would be awesome.

Thanks for the help 🙂

Brands= Blackberry I would highly recommend the curve

does she have to get the data package= no but she will pay alot more for the device if she does not and some stores will not even sell it to her without it. i would recommend at least signing up for it and useing it until the rebate comes she my find she likes it and if not she did not lose anything. because if she does not take it she will not get the $100 rebate

i would recommend going to a store they can give you alot of info and help her set it up and give you all the pros and cons of each pda (as long as she gets a decent sales person)

I agree, a Curve or a Pearl are really good introductory PDA's that are pretty easy to use. The Pantech Duo is good too and you only need unlimited texting to get the rebate. Which ever one she chooses make sure the rep actually shows her how to use the phone and doesn't run her out to get to the next customer. These phones are easy for us cause we sell and use them daily but for a new user it can seem overwhelming.

I don't know where you live, but they are doing a promo in my market for the blackberry curve, samsung blackjack II, and pantech DUO for 99.99 after $100 rebate. This is a killer deal. I personally use the curve and highly recommend it for call quality, operating system stability, ease of use, and battery life. The other two are good but windows is a little finicky.

everyone who wants a smartphone/PDA should jump on this deal pronto. all three phones are pretty good and will do everything you need them to. plus they all have GPS which is pretty cool.

Just curious, is your Curve in Titanium or red (not that color matters for call quality or anything)?

I love this forum, you all are sooo helpful. Thanks. 😁

Just one more question. We researched a little bit and are wondering is the Pantech Duo as bad as some of the reviews out there? And is the Pearl as good as the one in the current Promo? She kinda wants, (sorry can't think of a better word), a compact smartphone.

Thanks again for all the help.

Personal experience with both has been limited. I had tried out the BB Pearl when I was with Cellular One and returned it withing 24 hours. This was also my first experience with the BB interface, and the sales guy kinda pushed it on me. Oh well.
The first store I looked at for phones when I switched from Cell One to AT&T had a Pantech Duo, but the battery had died and was charging, plus that store was out of them, so I drove to the other corporate store in town that had them. After playing with it for a few minutes, the wow factor wore off, and I ended up getting just a regular phone.

I would recommend the BB Curve 8310, it is really not that big, and the screen resolution is very good, plus you get a camera with a flash and decent ba...

The pearl has the same user interface.

The curve-

1-Full keyboard
-Great for writing off term words
-Bad for having smaller buttons
2-2.0 megapixel camera as opposed to the 1 megapixel cam on the pearl

3-Higher resolution/bigger screen
4-More reliable track ball

Overall, the curve isn't that much bigger, just a tad wider and it is cheaper with this promo.

I have never sold a duo all though I've had one in my store for 2 months(says enough about it). The curve was also rated the best device of the year by a popular science magazine(I think popular mechanics)

I would tell her to get the curve because of the awesome price, and if she thinks it is too big she has 30 days to take it back and get the pearl or what...

While my friend hasn't made up her mind yet, I got to play with the Curve in the store and love it.

Can you explain the promo a little to me. I asked one of the reps in my store but she ended up confusing me and I'm not sure she knew exactly how it worked. I think she was new. She told me I would have to get a data plan starting at 39.99 added on to my voice plan to get the promo. Sound right?

Thanks again for the help.

Upfront, the phone is 199.99. With the blackberry it takes the additional purchase of atleast the blackberry BIS plan @29.99 a month to get the additional $100 rebate. I would buy it at an actual at&t corporate store to make sure they don't have a separate contract for the data feature in case your friend ends up not wanting internet or email because those are non contractual at cor and respectable agent locations

One thing you have to do is use the terminology that AT&T Mobility uses. When they use Smartphone, they only refer to two models made by HTC, the 3125 and the 2125. Those phon...

OK-
What smartphones does at&t mobility sell? The n75? I think not. There isn't even a smartphone in the lineup right now and that only mattered when determining what data rate to add to the customers account and since there is no smartphones available you are just confusing her.

at&t doesn't require you to purchase a pda connect or blackberry plan with your device, it is optional, and only necessary if you wish to get your rebate back. And, on the blackjack II and duo,you only need unlimited text to get the rebate back.

AT&T still sells the HTC 3125. If you ask them for a Smartphone, that is what you will get. On the other hand, if you ask for a Blackjack or Blackberry, right away they know waht you want. By using Smartphone to cover all nonconventional phones is the confusing policy. When you go to a restaurant which only sells Pepsi, you do not ask for Coke. You have to ask for what the store sells.

I never said that you have to buy a data package to buy a phone. You have to buy a data package to use the phone on AT&T's data network if you do not want to pay per use for data. Whether one gets the correct data package is an individual moral decision. I do not feel that it is proper to give advice to a potential new customer how to cheat the carr...

We haven't sold the 3125 for months. We can't even order it anymore.

Your right on what data package to choose is a personal decision. 99.9 times out of 100 though people won't care, they want the best deal possible whether it is the one the carrier wants you to use or not. How was I saying to cheat the company?
