I'm looking at buying a unlocked phone from the U.K. for my wife and the networks this phone supports are:

GSM 800 / GSM 1800

Will this be compatible on the cingular network?

Cingular uses the 800/850 MHz frequency. Cingular also has 1900Mhz frequency, but its really small compared to their 800/850 frequency. The reason that you should not get that phone is because it doesn't have the 1900MHz frequency. You need that frequency because Cingular has roaming agreements with T-Mobile, so if you go into an area that Cingular doesn't have the 800/850MHz coverage, you can roam onto T-Mobile's 1900Mhz tower signal based on each carriers Roaming agreements. The U.S. doesn't use the 1800 MHz frequency that the phone you are planning on buying from the UK.

i doubt it was 800 gsm, im sure it was 900 gsm. almost all european phones ive ever seen had have been at least duo band europe(900/1800). if my assuption is correct then no it would not work on cingular network at all. most european world phones wont work correctly on cingular because most world phones are only tri-band with only 1900 US
