Questions about data/MEdia billing...

I'm a little confused about how data transfer and the like is billed with Cingular. Assuming I am not subscribing to any data packages...
-You are only billed one cent for every kilobyte (1,000 bytes) of data transfered on the mobile internet...correct? I notice my phone keeps track of my data times, as well...for example, I transfered x amount of data in 34 minutes and 42 seconds. Does this usage time have any effect on billing?
-I have a Motorola v551, which has a mobile AIM option which let's me log onto my buddylist. Does this incure any data usage? And if so, how? Is it based on activity? Such as sending IMs and checking online status, or is it just a matter of the time I spend logged onto AIM? Messages sent and received while log...

Well 1 kilobyte = 1,024 bytes, time doesn't matter (that means it won't affect your minutes of use). If you log in to AIM you're going to be charged for the data while connectec and for each message either made or received. If you receive a message from AIM to your phone it will be charged as a text message also, but be aware because if the mesage is a multimedia messsage the price is a little higher. 😉

Okay, that clears a lot of things up. I was just getting a little nervous because one of my friends claimed she logged on the internet for just a quick sports-score check, and when her bill came, she owed an unexpected amount of money...I don't want any surprises...!
The AIM thing was kind of confusing me. Do you have any idea how much data AIM uses on a phone just to be signed on? (20kb/hour? 1byte/second? Any ideas?)
And just to clear up, when signing onto AIM from my phone, messages are sent and use data, correct? I was hoping I could sign onto AIM and just use text messages (which I subscribe to) and not data (which I don't subscribe to)
Sorry for all the questions!

Instead of using the AIM program, you can sign on to AIM forwarding from your computer and it will forward any messages you receive while away to your phone.

I'd probably go for the IM-forwarding if I wasn't tied down by dial-up...
