I go to college in Fairmont, WV. I was wondering if anyone knew what service i should get. I am getting either Cingular or Verizon. I looked at the maps and they both say they offer service. What do you think is the better service for my area?
...
I'm not sure exactly where Fairmont is but I've used both Cingular and Verizon throughout the Wheeling and Morgantown areas. I personally don't notice a difference in the service between either company there. It looks as if Cingular has the more reliable and widespread coverage in Northern WV while Verizon has the more reliable and widespread coverage in Southern WV. I would reccommend Cingular in this case.
Something else important to look at when choosing will be who you'll be talking to the most. If the majority of your friends and family have Verizon, choosing Verizon will save you minutes. And the same thing applies if the majority of your friends and family have Cingular, go with Cingular.
In any case, both companies have a ...

What company are you currently with now? Why did you chose the one you are with? Which company offers better customer service? Do you know anything about the unlimited nights and weekends? How does that work? Do you have to be in a certain area before that applies? Thanks. Chad 🙂

I am just wondering about the new GSM service. I had the old Cingular about two years ago and it sucked. It was quite spotty up here. I had to go outside of my home to get service. Who knows...

I currently use Cingular. I went with Cingular because where I live their are little coverage problems with both Verizon and Cingular. I had Verizon not too long ago but recently dropped the service due to Cingular's pricing. Both companies have worked amazingly well for me.
About customer service, neither company is great. The customer service quality is always going to depend on what representative you recieve on the phone and whether they're having a good day or not.
The unlimited nights and weekends work the same for both Verizon and Cingular. Minutes after 9 p.m until 5 a.m. from Monday-Thursday are free (nights). Minutes starting at 9 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday are also free (weekends). Cingular gives you th...

Well thank youll for your input. I currently am with U.S. Cellular. I dont know whose towers they roam off of but thier service is great up here. I am mainly going to be in the west virginia/virginia area. I know both services should be pretty good but i just cant decide on one. One more ? Is cingulars service completely digital? They cannon roam off of analog towers? I am kind of confused on the "Allover network".
...
Yes, Cingular's network is completely digital service. You cannot roam off of any analog towers, but with the largest digital network in the U.S. you most likely will never need to.
Verizon's network is actually completely digital too, they just use other companies analog towers for backup service. But like I said with Cingular, you'll probably never use it.

Do you think verizon gets service in more places than cingular? Which one has better national coverage in your opinion? Do you think i would get service in some areas with a verizon phone that i wouldnt with a cingular one?
...
Analog service is really becoming worthless in my opinion.
Because everything is becoming all-digital, the analog networks of companies are degrading and analog towers are so far apart that even if you did need to use an analog signal it wouldn't be reliable enough to carry on even the shortest of conversations.
Leaving analog out of the picture due to its unreliability and scarceness (by the way it will no longer exist after 2007) Cingular definitely has the largest national coverage. And that's no opinion, that's a fact.
In all honesty you'll have a signal with both companies in most places. But then there will always be places where Cingular is stronger, or the other way around. The service quality will be too close to tell.

If you are going to be going in school at Fairmont, WV you may have some issue with service. This is one of the area that cingular and at&t didnt have service in. Altough they do have agreement in this area with another provider (dobson) you may have some minor issue from time to time with getting signal.
...
If you are using Cellular One/Dobson as the GSM roaming partner for AT&T & Cingular in the Morgantown area, you might not be real happy. Dobson has not yet overlayed their network with GSM 850 coverage. It's 1900 only coverage, so in house coverage may not be good unless you are close to a tower. Dobson's towers are spaced more for 850. So there tends to be a lot of weak spots throughout the area for GSM 1900 users. They have 850 TDMA coverage, but their entire TDMA network tends to get bogged down by the number of college kids (especially in Morgantown). They have yet to confirm whether they intend to overlay with GSM 850 in the WV area.

How do you know this? Would you recomend verizon in this area or go with cingular? It says on cingulars page that fairmont is in the network. Does this not mean that its GSM? So thier entire network is not GSM? Thanks for the input
...
I got a little verbose in my earlier message. If you had an older cingular plan, you could roam using TDMA, but Cingular doesn't allow new TDMA activations, plus TDMA is terrible up there now anyway due to spectrum reallocation to GSM.
The problem you have is that neither Verizon nor Cingular have native coverage in this area. They both have roaming partners. Cingular's partner is Dobson/Cellular One and is limited by what I said earlier. I'm unsure of who Verizon's Partner is, but it will either be US Cellular or NTelos as they are the only CDMA carriers in this part of WV. If you look at Verizon's coverage for this area, it looks like digital coverage is only in the major cities, and then it converts to analog/rm outside of the citi...

Have you considered SprintPCS? They have native coverage there as well as providing bands on their phones that allow roaming throughout WV, well the whole country for that matter. I just don't know the saturation level and how many people are on the system, given that many college people use Sprint. Wireless choice was so much simpler 10 years ago. You could choose Analog A or Analog B. And if you didn't like Analog A carrier, you could take your phone with you to Analog B carrier. Oh Well, to dream....... It sure would be nice if the FCC would force all analog license holders to offer both CDMA and GSM 850 service on all of their analog towers. That would at least help to even out coverage disparities throughout the country.

I am currently using U.S. Cellular. I can get perfect service up here in Fairmont. I am pleased with their reception and they are an excellent company. I get service pretty much everywhere i need to. It says on my phone that i have a 1X signal full bars from in my house and the service around fairmont is great. Now do they own these towers in Fairmont? Would verizon be roaming off of them? What do you think is the better service between GSM and CDMA? What are the benefits of both? I am either going with Cingular or Verizon becauase of reputation and features. Cingular is cheaper and has rollover but i just want the better service. I have been hearing that Cingular has spotty coverage with GSM from other people as well. Do you k...

Elkins WV also has no service in this area for cingular or at&t. If your going to be in WV i wouldnt get cingular because they dont have a whole alot of service. They do have raoming partners which allows you to roam off thier tower but they dont have many of thier own toers there yet.
