I dropped my trusty old (Legacy AT&T) Nokia 3200 in the pool today, and it won't power up. I purchase an unlocked Sony Ericsson W810i about a week ago, but it hasn't arrived yet. I've taken the 3200 apart in the hope that it might come back to life so I can get my contacts out of it.

In the meantime, I have a Nokia 2610 GoPhone that I bought as an occasional phone for the kids. I'd like to use that til the w810 arrives, BUT it's locked of course.

Take you phone to local cell phone shop that will unlock it for you. Call first to make sure they do. It cost me $20 to mine unlocked. Then my legacy sim card worked.
I've had the legacy plan for 4 years and I'm not giving it up until they can match my costs. Silly to pay double just to get a new sim card or phone. I'll stick to refurbished phones from the cell store or e-bay.

Thanks for the advice!

My new unlocked phone actually arrived just a few days later, so I changed my sim over to that. And in a miraclous recovery, my Nokia 3200 started working again. So I'll just wait the 90 days or whatever for AT&T to give me the unlock code.

The other ploy I hear that works is to tell them you are going to Europe and want to buy a sim card overthere. Actually it's cheaper to buy one there than use the us carriers, for real.
