3G Iphone Activation (In Store Only?)

I read on engadgetmobile.com that activations will be in store only..... however I already called my local apple store and they confirmed that you can still buy it and take it home to activate it.

It seems likely that in store activation will not be mandatory.... it makes more sense that it will be an option for those who don't want to try it themselves.

Any input here guys on the real truth?

I think it will be in store only. I've read that a few places too, it's likely that iTunes won't have that capability anymore.

I how are apple stores going to activate them and run credit etc? Does this mean you have to take the 3g IP from the App store to the ATT store to activate it?

If so what prevents you from buying it from apple then not going to get it activated and simply unlock it?

Nowhere does it say anything about not being able to unlock it, it just says you can't activate it at home.

About Apple running credit and such, that I don't know. My guess is either Apple gets training or AT&T sends some guys to Apple stores.

Activate it, cancel it and pay the 175 term fee. Then I have one that still cost less than the original did back in the day. =)

What network do you want to run it on?
T-Mobile has no compatible 3G network for the new iphone.
Might work on Rogers in Canada, couldn't say for sure.

Rogers Wireless is actually going to be carrying the iPhone. It would strike me as simpler to just go through them unless their prices are totally crack-inspired, or the greenback takes another swan dive.

I also think the wording here would make it seem that it's impossible to purchase online or activate at home. They don't say that you can activation it in a store, they're saying you can't activate it at home.

You do realize that engadget photoshopped that last sentence in there?

The email we received stated iTunes will be put on all computers through OPUS (the POS program). We already have iTunes seperately as we've required 2G iPhone activation in my store since the beginning of the year.

As far as the contract, I can see them loading a different version of the contract that will have a higher cancellation fee built in for iPhones.

According to the email sent to us; yes. Any place they are sold they will also be activating them.

duuuuuuumb. but I see why. Still dumb. My mother has terminal cancer and can't get around much anymore. I don't want to make her go to the apple store just to activate a phone. Oh well.
