scruffy

I live in Long Island, New York. Which is that island that is east of Manhatten(N.Y.C.) The area codes here are 516 and 631 and the zipcodes begin with 117__. I don't carrier about coverage in N.Y.C.
Does anyone how good Cingular is here in Long Island? It seems that Cingular has great selection of phones, but nobody can tell me what kind of qaulity signal exist here.
Consumer Report says go with Verizon, but I don't know. They say CDMA has better coverage than GSM.
I don't want spotty coverage, if there are people in Long Island, N.Y. that actuality use Cingular please post here. I hope to hear from more than three people.
Thank you in advance.

I would go with what consumer reports says, they aren't biased like all of the Cingular employees getting ready to answer this question. You could also get T-Mobile, they shared the New York network with Cingular so it is the same thing and cheaper! 😲

Actually consumer reports was a little off. That survey was taken almost six months ago before any of the merger issues were present. The same group has found greatly varying stats form carrier to carrier at different times. While they didn't much nice to say about Cingular Six months ago a more recent study by the same group found drastic improvments in the same issues they reported. As far as going with T-Mobile that really should be addressed by the customer. While it is true that you get more anytime minutes with T-Mobile you lose a great deal of coverage (lets face it T-Mobile has to piggyback on Cingular service on Long island).

to Scuffy:
Go into a cingular store and ask them to use the MTI program to determine coverage in th...

How is the merger going to help??? ATT was a roaming partner to Cingular so it's not like anything new is happening here.

Scuffy should take advantage of the trial period each provider has and I say start with the company that earned the highest rating in New York instead of gambling with a company that claims to be raising the bar.

I have a friend in Global sales at SBC in Chicago and he get's a Cingular line through SBC for work but carries a Verizon phone for personal use and says that Verizon blows away Cingular. Consumer reports and JD Power favor Verizon in New York anyway!!!

I didn't say that the merger was going to help, I just used it as a time line point. The fact is that you are using outdated information to back your claim, which is fine, it just goes to show that people will use whatever information best supports thier stance. It's kind of like quoting Marx to argue Communism works and not taking into account all of the failures that have occured in applying the theory since his death. Eventually someone is going to call you on it. And as far as your friend goes, who cares. Do you know how many people have friends here who one thing or another? It's just another urban myth and in an academic argument it just doesn't stand.

It is no Urban myth, there are quite a few sales people in his office using Verizon or U.S. Cellular here in Chicago. I thought I also saw a posting that Verizon struck a major deal in California to be the cellular provider for SBC.

Says you (I'm sure it's true to some extent, but it still holds no place in a discource like this. Those kind of statements are are hard to back up with facts because of confidence issues and besides whatever service someone uses is a matter of opinion, they use it because they prefer it and I'm sure there are people who work the opposite way).

And yes SBC did contract for Phones in California, but SBC and Cingular are seperate corporate Entities. It's like Disney and Time Warner. Disney Owns Time Warner, but time warner, like Cingular, reports profits seperatly. There is no expectation of allegience. It's not uncommon to see this kind of transactin in the Buisness world. Hell, Plank Road Brewery buys hops from Coors Brewing Compan...

This again. Okay you want the argument to go back to the beginning here goes.

I have just read the last for responses, and I thank you for your input.
What I don't understand is this. Doesn't anyone on or in Long Island, N.Y. read Phonescoop?
I'm not interested in maps, I want to hear from people who live there who actually USE CINGULAR. This ialand is 110 miles long and about 20 miles wide.
I would think that a least 10 people if not more that live here use Cingular with ATTW merger.
Consumer Reports did mention ATTW, but it rated poorly in N.Y.
Though Cingular were or was a good company, when it bought out a "crappy ATTW, did Cingular reputation lower it's bench mark?
Come on Long Islander's let me hear from you.
Thank you in advance.

to be perfectly honest, I would say take advantage of buyers remorse, or if you want to somewhat unbiased answer, talk to a store that sells cingular, verison, spint and Tmobile to see what the common answer is on long island.

I can speak on my uncles experience. He has Cingular and VzW, and he loves both. For the most part they work in the same places. The only difference is that his VzW works at his job and not his home (which is good because that is his work phone) and his Cingular is vice versa. I know that it isn't much help, but thats all I have.
