SSN

Can I subscribe to post-paid Cingular service without giving my SSN? I don't care how much I have to pay as a deposit. I don't want my SSN in yet another database if I can avoid it.

Most places will require the maximum deposit if you dont want youre ssn used. This could be as high as $750.

Cingular requires the SSN for your credit check...if you do not want to give the SSN, you can look at some form of prepaid. Also, if it helps your decision any, Cingular only keeps the last four digits of your SSN in the database, and that is used only for identity verification when you call in to customer service.

Wow! They're not supposed to keep the entire social on file...I wasn't aware of that. It must be a care thing, you can't see it in POS.

umm. . . . they do need to keep the entire number. a four digit number is not unique. They have more than 9,999 customers. They will also need the number to report those who don't pay to the credit berau. Also think about what would happened if someone else has your SSN and tried to get service from a company in which you already are a customer. A red flag will go up and that person is caught. (Thieves get numbers from people who do not carefully guard their own SSN - such as not shredding your payment stubs or leaving your stub laying around in plain vew. - not from legitament companies which you give your number to aquire service. 😉

I have to disagree with this. I was in the store yesterday buying my vx-8000, and there was someone there that was trying to get 1 line and they told them that they required a deposit of $800.

I use to work for Verizon and the highest is $400, but if they have a delinquent account it could be higher. And the deposit is per line so maybe they were getting more than one line.

Corporate people have access to the whole thing (customer service and corporate stores) agents only have access to the last four.

I dont know what systems you all use, but in Care you can see the entire social security number. Yes you do need a social security on file. They need this incase you dont pay for the services you use, they can report this to the Credit Buearu

A "made up social" is illegal. I wouldn't do it. I'll pay the $750 or whatever the maximum deposit is.

I'm bothered by the news about Secret Service being compromised and T-Mobile getting hacked and JetBlue selling customer information despite its promise not to do so, etc. I don't want my SSN out there, but I won't use an illegal means to achieve my privacy.

(I don't mean to come down on you or anything, but I do want to make it clear that giving a false SSN for any reason is illegal.)

FWIW, the vast majority of identity theft is the result of either mailbox theft or trashing--no matter how much a fuss is made about evil computer geniuses hacking secure systems to get people's information it's much more likely that if your security is compromised it's because of some tweeker going through your garbage, or the garbage of your insurance company. Identity theft, by and large, is not a sophisticated operation...

Accually it depends on the state you are in. For example if you are in California then it is illegal to require a SSN to do a credit check. But you must still provide enough information to do the credit check such as a credit card and your drivers license. They can still check your credit with that so you won't need to use your SSN and they cannot require it. If your credit checks out then you will get it with no deposit.

Ya california just passed a huge law on what utility companys can do and cannot do. If you live in california it might be something you want to look up. You can really screw your utility companys with it. It's throught California Public Utilities Commision (they certianly charge you enough on your bill they should do something for you).

California is full of paranois pansies. I'd rather talk to someone from New York any time. All they do is complain and try to belittle.
