How does AT&T get a signal on deserted islands?

I thought you have to be within a few miles of a cell tower but now AT&T is advertising (with Bill Curtis) that AT&T can bring the internet to deserted islands. Quite a achievement!

They found a way to piggyback on Verizon signals.
