What good is a 3G Iphone if theres no 3G coverage?

For all the hype about the 3G Iphone I wonder how many dissapointed Mac fanboys there will be when they realize how weak ATTs 3G coverage still is,despite them beating thier chests on much better it is now. Sure it may be faster than Verizon's 3G where its available, but looking at the coverage on ATTs website the 3G coverage looks like little islands in a sea. I cant even get an ATT 3G signal in my house and supposedly Im in an area "blanketed" by 3G coverage and I constantly fall back on EDGE all throughout the Phoenix metro area. ATT must have good service in some places with so many subscribers, but it aint Phoenix or Tuscon, thats for sure.

If your not getting coverage in a 3g area, that is supposed to be blanketed, you might wanna get your your phone checked out. I had the same problem, it turned out to be my phone that had the issues with picking up a 3g network. About the 3g iphone, well, not everyone is going to have the perfect service in the perfect city area. Besides, its not like it wont have a return policy.

Yep - return policy is 30 days, with a 10% restock fee. I bet many will miss that in the small print.

If you think Phoenix and Tucson are bad you should take a trip up to Flagstaff. I went into the AT&T store this past weekend and said, "Hey, with the 3G iphone about to come out is there any chance we might see 3G here soon?" She told me it should be here by the end of the year. I had to laugh to myself inside. AT&T has 280 markets "covered" with 3G service now and they claim they will have 350 covered by year end. Another 70 markets upgrading, I can guarantee you lowly little Flagstaff will not be one of the 70. Who would buy a 3G iphone and pay $30 a month for a data plan that is EDGE only in their home market? To be fair to their customers AT&T should stick with a $20 data fee for new iphone customers that don't have 3G service at their ...

I know what you mean. I'm switching from Verizon to AT&T to get the iPhone 3G and I live in an area that used to be a Dobson market, so we are pretty rural and I think it's ridiculous that I have to pay extra for 3G data when I'm going to constantly be in an EDGE area. We won't see 3G in my area of Michigan for years. I just can't believe that Verizon and Sprint can almost completely cover their entire networks with 3G, but it takes AT&T years to do it for them.

'paying extra for 3G data'... are you guys serious. it's the same price as any other pda. blackberrys, blackjack, treo... it's 30 dollars. no blackberry at&t sells is 3G but that's the majority of data plans sold in the past 6 mon...

I realize that, but I think a lot of people wish that AT&T would allow you to use the original iPhone data plan if you live in an EDGE only area. For people like me, I'll never be going to a 3G area except maybe once or twice in a year.

but the reason it was only twenty dollars was because at&t wasn't subsidizing the cost of the handset and passing the savings on to the customer. it had nothing to do with edge or 3G.

So why is there a $15 a month unlimited data plan you can put on any unlocked phone? Is that because there was no subsidy too? Your data pricing analogy makes no sense at all.
AT&T can get $30 or &45 a month from corporate users because they have to have it.
AT&T can get $30 a month from iphone users because of exclusivity rights with Apple they can force that price on its iphone customers.
Lets face it, it has nothing to do with subsides, it has everything to do with AT&T profits.

that's pretty much it. they subsidize the cost of handsets. but with pdas and blackberry they charge that amount because they expect high usage. also, the more data used the more of a strain it puts on the network...

Ive used many 3G devices in the last couple of years,Blackjack,Sync,Lg cu500, and now a US 3G N95 8GB, and the 3G coverage in Phoenix metro and East Maricopa county(Mesa,Gilbert,Queen Creek) stinks with all of them. Im using ATT only because of my desire for cool GSM 3G devices, and since Tmobile is stuck in Government not vacating 3G spectrum hell they are the only choice. I dont expect perfect 3G coverage but ATTs is not even decent. Just type in 85242 zip code on thier coverage locator tool and youll see the giant swiss cheese holes in the the voice network, and thats a major populated area in South Gilbert and Queen Creek thats has absolutely horrid coverage, you know its bad when Cricket has better service in the area.

Here in PA, our 3G is supposed to be turned on around the 12th of July. My understanding (I may be incorrect) is that the deal with Apple releasing the iPhone 3G early (supposed to come out around XMas; ATT wanted to get it out for back to school) was that ATT would turn on the 3G in most or all of the markets before, during, or shortly after launch.

As far as 3G in the Phoenix area, I would wonder why you don't have good coverage and maybe let ATT know that you are not getting the best coverage. Any tall buildings or other obstructions? Could be the tower is not a 3G tower that ATT is renting from and that's holding you back.

I live in the Phoenix area also and agree with what howard said. My phone switches from 3G to Edge frequently & it does not matter if I am indoors or outdoors. At&t does not update all the towers. It seems they either have a small percentage of it 3G & the rest falls back to Edge. Their 3G speeds are nothing to write home about either.

You are also now getting GPS service included in the monthly fee. You did not have that with the old plan.

People, stop crying about the new iPhone. If you want it, then get it. If not, then buy a freakin' LG Dare or something.
