Still Two Different Systems (TDMA & GSM)??

My neighbor lives next to me on an AT&T plan and phone with excellent reception. Based on that, I went to sign up for new Cingular service but was told my neighbor was still on the old TDMA system and there was no coverage in my area with the new GSM system. So all AT&T and Cingular towers are not of the same system? I thought that's how they had the largest coverage area now. I assume all will eventually be changed to GSM? Any timing on this?

Within the next six months perhaps (but dont know exactly) TDMA will cease to exist. Thats why everyone is being migrated to Cingular GSM from AWS, TDMA is fading away like Analog did years back.

Analog will be the first to go in 2007 but TDMA is going to stick around a little longer. There are still companies selling TDMA service and because Cingular is in the business of making money we are going to keep the TDMA Service on to capture the roaming revenues. And Analog is still up and running. There are some people still using it.

Hey Dude ALL companies are in the business of making money!
About those signals, they maybe around longer than what you state. What is happening is that the federal law will not REQUIRE companies to carry anolog begining 2007 (TDMA at a later date) The companies, like Cingular that are already migrating into the future are the likely ones to drop the older signals as long as they are no longer required too. The other companies may hang onto the older signals longer because of the cost into overhauling their systems. There is no mandatory law that the older signals must be dropped.
My advise hope for the best (keep your tdma service) and prepare for the worst (lose your service) However by then the GSM coverage will have grown and you may ...

That doesn't mean that analog is going to disappear of the face of the united states. It may be availble thru another small low tech company. I myself prefer to stay with cingular who is update with the technology 😁

in all actuality, it costs more money to run analog then to keep it, and TDMA is going that way as well, but as long as people have phones that work off of these technologies, the service won't be dropped. at least thats the current rule, now that may, and probably will, change by 2007. til that day though there's no telling.

i'm sorry but you are wrong. In six months they will be stop selling tdma services through ATTWS,as it is you can only get a tdma service through indirect authorized dealers,or ADD A Line if you already haveestablished tdma services.

In six months (roughly) the licences run out on those dealers, so there won't be any new services but the established services can stay on their plans, but in six months, all plans will be taken out of the system which means the customer has to stsy on their plan with ...
