GSM Coverage
Not ripping on GSM at ALL just curious: Is it because of the technology, or just less towers and or roaming partners, that GSM covers less square miles?

It's due to the lacking of towers. GSM requires more tower placement then CDMA because the signal can't reach as far; however, GSM has better building penetration then CDMA. Both technologies have their pros and cons and aren't really bad either way. I guess it would all depend on if you travel overseas or not. With CDMA you have less international coverage and more hassles than you would with GSM because if you have GSM and an unlocked phone (which can be done on any device) you can purchase a prepaid SIM and just put it in your phone and not worry about it.

No worries. General statements kind of irk me when there are a lot of x - factors involved in signal strength. While the 2 technologies are similar in execution, how they are executed couldn't be more night and day. And to further granulate the issue with GSM is the codec type.

I don't follow, what do you mean an "expat?" If you mean an expert; no by no means am I an expert. I just like the technology and basic networking. I tinker around with computers and such but in general I just like to know how things work.

YEp the bottom line is GSM sucks in many areas, They do have more drops and there is more "noise"
The hand offs are terrible.
However. Being seduced by the non branded phones and flexibility is what keeps me paying month to month..but avoiding the contracts.

It's your prerogative but I don't understand why you would want to pay for a service that is by your own admission, extremely sub-par. But then I don't mind being in a contract because I know I am going to pay for cell phone service anyway. For example right now I am currently under 2 contracts... one with VZW and the other is with VodaFone Espana.

It's probably nothing more than the fact that more regional carriers use CDMA, thus more coverage.
GSM has actually come a long way since 2002 when it was barely anywhere.

I have posted it before but to those that don't know, I got into the celluar industry because I provided leasing solutions to various cell providers in the north east and upper-midwest. In a nutshell I was the middle-man that handled leasing and real estate contracts so that cell towers could now dot the landscap...
