This will only likely have an immediate effect on some laptop connect and tethering users. Of course, when 3G becomes more widespread and smartphones start holding 20+ gig it may be more of a mainstream issue.

The fine print with the laptop connect and tethering plans also limit the data to 5 gigs a month. Basically, these plans are meant to bridge the gap in WiFi coverage, not to be used as a primary Internet connection because your home does not get DSL or cable.

A few people maintaining a steady data stream is not an issue. Thousands of people walking around maintaining a steady data stream would most likely degrade overall service.

AT&T needs to be consistant with this now, before it becomes the norm instead of an exception.

it's a good idea. look at wired cable/dsl and the amount of bandwidth used for p2p and how that effects average users like us. we suffer because 5-10% of people that use it 24/7.

DSL is a direct connection, and the bandwidth is not shared (at least this is how AT&T DSL works). Which means your service is not directly affected in the same way as cable is. But yeah, lots of torrents constantly running on a neighborhood cable branch = slower Internets for joo. 😉

I've already had a few customers come in with the warning letters. A few months back we had a customer who was using an aircard in his wireless router. He had 8 computers linked in and was using about 60-80GB/month. ATT sent him two letters telling him to knock it off or they would charge him the overage at 1 cent per Kb. He didn't take them seriously and got himself a $19,000 bill plus he had to pay the $175 cancellation fee. He refused to pay and they sent a lawyer to his house to explain how he was going to pay or they were going to take him to court. Just for all the reps out there, he bought the phone at a COR store and the rep neglected to tell him of the 5GB soft cap or the P2P violations. That was one of the worst things I've ...

i wasn't talking about a shared loop like cable vs. dsl direct connection. but over all, p2p and bit torrent traffic account for about 5-10% of internet usage and that's only from about 5-10% of people using the internet.

that should have been 90-95% of usage from 5-10% of users...
