Can someone answer a question for me? I have AT&T and would like to get the Pearl. The rep told me that without the data plan I couldn't receive picture messages. Is that true?

Also if I get the Pearl with WiFi do I need the data plan? And can anyone tell me which Pearl is better wifi or gps?

thats correct technically... picture messages can come but you will have the 'download' them and it will charge you 1 cent per kb. And we cannot guarentee that the service will work correctly each time.

you are so wrong. with at&t there is NO charge for the data transferred for mms, picture messaging. and no it doesn't matter if it's a phone or a pda and that includes blackberry. you do not need a data plan to receive picture messages.... and why would you say it can't be guaranteed, have you actually ever held a blackberry??? so again, with the pearl 8110 or 8120 or curve, it doesn't matter if you don't have a blackberry package if you don't want to use internet. pay per use will need to ...

Read CSP.

Yes you do get charged if it asks you to download the picture. If it appears you are fine. This is exactly why we have problems with customers because you all tell them its part of the package. Yes I have held a blackberry.

Without the blackberry plan provisioning in snooper sets "Is the device MMS capable" to no.

So it appears as a go to "view my message.com" message. Which is NOT part of the package.

I know the new Pearl's, Curve, and soon Bold, will be able to send and receive mms correctly. So is this one of the new Pearl's? If so, it will be just like a regular phone.

thank you! they even had an update in csp about it not long ago. older blackberry models couldn't because they weren't provisioned for mms at all...

With WiFi you don't NEED the data plan, but I would get it. Are you going to have WiFi every time you need internet? Your other question depends, which would you get more use out of, GPS or WiFi? I could tell you which would be better for me but that has nothing to do with your needs.

Yes. You can try the pay per use however the service may not work and if it does it may not work all the time.

If you plan to use the GPS with the AT&T Navigator, get the data plan. Otherwise, you are pay-per-use with the maps info (since it uses the browser for the maps data).

Also, per CSP, "The Curve and models released after 1/20/2008 will support MMS and IM messaging." It is only if you also want to use the browser that you need the BB data plan.

Thanks for all the help. Looks like I'm going to go with the Pearl 8110, because the 8120 is no longer available in the stores in my area.

Thanks again. 🙂
