Simple Activation Questions for AT&T reps

My wife's phone is available for upgrade the day before her birthday. She wants an iPhone. 1) can I get the iPhone ahead of time if we don't activate until her birthday? Can we activate outside of the store? (I understand that there is more to activating an iPhone than swapping a SIM.)

No, when it's purchased it would be activated. There isn't a way to delay the activation.

The only thing I can think of is to get ahold of her phone without her knowing. Activate the iPhone at the store and then put the iPhone SIM into her old phone until her birthday. When you give her the phone, pop the SIM card back into the iPhone and she'll be good to go.

Ok. First thing, if you're not eligible for an upgrade, the iphone 3g will still cost $200 more than if you were eligible for an upgrade. We're currently VERY strict on early upgrades for iphones.

So it'll be difficult to do, and still get contract pricing.

Not if he goes the day before her birthday (which he said she'd be eligible). Then he can do as I said.

No where in there did I say he could upgrade early.

Lol That's what I understood him to be asking.. If he goes to the store and upgrades in the store the day before, he can then take the SIM out and put it into her "old" phone until the next day when he gives her the iPhone. Then he can put it back in the iPhone and she's good to go.
