3G Signal

I have had problems with the 3G signal at my house. First it was the Blackjack and then the Sam a737 or 767 i cant remember. The signal for 3G is very weak 1-2 bars at most times. Never had a full signal. I would love to buy the Iphone but I am hessitant because of known problems with the signal on it and my specific problem. The web site says my location is in 3G coverage and per ATT reps it is as well. I had to switch from my Blackjack to a Pearl and my wife had to switch from the sam a737 to a v3m because edge works just fine.
1. Is there anything that can be done on the network side? Trouble tickets?
2. Does anyone know how to change from 3G to edge and keep the signal on edge only? I know the Blackjack was able to do it but I dont ...

I'm not sure about the 737, but I know the iPhone has an option to turn 3G off and keep it on EDGE/Wifi.

I think your best bet will be to call the manufacturer. You may try calling AT&T, but you'll have to be lucky enough to get a rep that knows what he/she is doing.
I don't know what happening within AT&T, but you'd think that a customer service rep would be trained well enough to activate a SIM card over the phone. Well, I found out the hard way, after being transfered 3 times, that these reps are not....
