EDGE and EV_DO

BeachSlapped

I posted this on the VZW forum too...
Is EV-DO as fast as EDGE?
I mean, are the equally fast? what I'm trying to ask is: is EDGE the GSM's "EV-DO"? or is it UMTS the GSM's "EV-DO"? Can someone clarify this for me?

It's faster than current umts that is seen in europe. It is also faster than AT&T's umts tests that were launched in 6 U.S. cities.

However, the umts technology that you will see from Cingular, has an upgrade called hsdpa which makes it 3 times as fast as current ev-do technologies. Cingular's testing showed sustained data rates in excess of 3megs... Sorry, ev-do. 😢

It is actually HSDPA and it isn't available to consumers unlike EV DO which has been launched in over 30 cities so far. EV DO is also faster than advertised for legal reasons. I have seen 3.5 mps with Venturi compression software when testing on toast.net.
