More bars?

Does anyone living in the Kentucky, Virginia area know when at&t is going to expand their network? Some people who've read some of my forums know me as a "Verizon fanboy" but I always give the consideration to other choices. I even went to Alltel once...ugh! I do think Verizon is top notch when it comes to quality but I'm curious about at&t service. The main reason I haven't went to ATT in the past is because of coverage. More bars in more places don't really add up in Virginia and eastern Kentucky. I now live in an area where pretty much all carriers have service (except Alltel) but when I visit family in Virginia I will loose service with ATT. I had family to visit me while I was still in Virginia (all had ATT) and when they crossed...

I just drove through that area last month and experienced some problems but nothing disastrous. I ran 64 to 77 to 460 into Blackburgs and then 64 to Williamsburg. The only problems I had that entire time was 460 was dead until you got into Blacksburg VT Area. If there is dead area like you say it's unlikely it's on a priority list because the heavy traveled and well populated areas are covered.

I figured those areas were covered. Its well populated in that area. The most southwestern county of VA is mainly the area I'd like to see expansion. Verizon and Alltel are the only 2 carriers in the whole area, and Alltel is about to get aquired by Verizon making Verizon the only present carrier there. Verizon said in areas that the 2 carriers overlap they would sell the towers they don't need. I'm hoping that ATT will see this as a chance to get their foot in the door. Its nice to have at least the 2 largest carriers in places like that. In some areas closer to city type population there are ATT towers present, but the small towns in that area I'm refering has NONE. Even if I never switch to ATT it would be nice for my family visit...

Well you should also know that AT&T's statement that they have "More Bars in More Places" is based on "global coverage". Not on their own coverage! So, they can basically have the worst coverage in the nation and still claim "More Bars in More Places" as long as the little part at the bottom says "based on global coverage".

I also do believe it's because Verizon and Alltel are CDMA carriers, they have deployed their networks so much better than AT&T especially because America is so rural. In more dense, urban countries in Europe, GSM can work if it's deployed right. In America, it's not. Just plain not. GSM really doesn't work in rural areas that are heavily wooded and such. CDMA does exceptionally well. In my area of Michigan, this is a ...

It is very tricky, you are right. I used to have Cingular's TDMA service and I had much more coverage with that than GSM. I would switch to CDMA but they don't have the SIM cards and I change phones all the time...so I am stuck...:-(

But I like AT&T, I just wish they'd get it together because they are about to be number 2.

Verizon has the largest native network, AT&T's pales in comparison, but they have quite a bit of roaming in place, but it still does not match Verizon.

T-Mobile and Spring, their native networks are very small.

AT&T needs to expand their coverage big time! But the problem is, they are STILL paying for:

1. Cingular's acquisition of AT&T Wireless Services, Inc.

2. SBC's acquisition of AT&T

3. The New AT&T's acquisition of BellSouth

4. The rebranding of AT&T Wireless to Cingular and then Cingular, and Bellsouth to the new AT&T.

Hopefully in a few years they can really expand their native network. I have noticed that coverage in the midwest is getting somewhat worse. AT&T needs to improve on coverage or they will lose man...

I work for an at&t auth retailer in staunton va. mid-far west part of va and the coverage here is barely up to par.

you get service in large cities, but rural wise at&t (gsm in general) is not the best choice at all.

we have stores here in staunton, and south-western va in collinsville and wytheville. one in suffolk va and on in barboursville va.

we all definately see the difference when it comes to cdma vs gsm.

although they said in the south-western stores that at&t actually picks up in some places where rival US Cellular dosent.

as far as here in staunton goes, cdma dominates and our customers are either rich kids that want the best phones, or more older customers (55 and up) that have been true to the carrier, ever since ...

Its plain and simple.. Verizon's coverage as a whole is far better than that of AT&T as shown by J.D.Power and by consumer reports. While there might be some VERY small areas where AT&T will have slightly better coverage than Verizon this is VERY FEW and far between. For the most part Verizon dominates in every aspect in 98% of the country. I have many friends who were intent on AT&T until they decided to give Verizon a shot, then they told me they coudnt believe that they stayed with AT&T all that time.. AT&T does have the Iphone which is a very cool phone but the network SUCKS as shown by the thousands of reviews online of low signal and MANY, MANY dropped calls..

a true comparison is prepaid coverage vs. prepaid coverage. both companies use roaming partners in their national coverage map but check out thier prepaid map.....
