Has anyone checked out the new Samsungs reported to release on at&t over at Engadgetmobile? Pretty nice. Also, supposedly we'll see the Nokia E72, hopefully with UMTS this go round.

I maybe have one customer a month who even asks what the megapixels are on a phone. At this time, the mainstream user wants their phone camera to be able to take quick snapshots and send them to other people's phones.

Knowing how many phones out there don't have extra memory cards or come with gigs of memory on board, imagine the frustration of taking a 6 or 8 MP pic and trying to send several megabytes to another person's phone? Will their phone even have enough room to store it?

I'm not saying there are not people who want their camera to be a phone (although I don't think serious camera enthusiasts are gonna go looking for a Samsung or Blackberry camera over a Nikon or Canon), I just don't see the current demand at a level to ma...

Applause for tao! There is a lot more to camera technology than just megapixels. If you need a good camera, go buy one!

The mass market does NOT have a demand for the type of phones that Jay is always griping for.

the main reason is because the average consumer wouldn't understand why they couldn't mms the picture to another phone.

What do you mean consumers wouldn't understand that they can't mms a pic to another phone, OF COURSE you can. We're not talking about the iphone!

Me and my mother send pic msgs all the time to each others phoner.

You really lost me, are you saying most consumers are stupid? If so, I agree!

I believe the point of that is that when you take a picture with a 5meg camera the file gets larger and the network won't allow you to send it.

Ok, you keep saying this and frankly you have ZERO proof, just rampant speculation.

The problem is the only phones that have high end cameras do not fit within their business plan for the high end devices they choose to carry. RIM does not currently make a high end camera phone. There are no HTC high end cameras. The iPhone has a weak camera. The price point for those high end cameras has not faired well in the market place, so why commit to carrying something that won't sell as well as say a Curve or Blackjack or Centro. Frankly they are also smart enough to know that you CAN purchase these phones elsewhere and use them on their network so the customers that truly want them can buy them on their own.

Are that many people out there aware of the unlocked/unbranded industry?

I don't think that many people know they can get phones places other than an ATT Store.

You think so though?

I think the people, like you, that want those phones AND are willing to pay for them know how to get them.

The are tons of people who want a better camera phone but most think spending $99 on a phone is too much. Why should AT&T invest the time and energy to distribute a handset that so few people will purchase? It is just not smart business.

Then again, the age old question? Why should ATT distribute phones? They should stick to cell towers!

And YES!, I do know where to get phones that are too good for ATT, it's called: ebay!

Anybody who shops at Best Buy probably knows about unlocked/unbranded phones. They have them for sale at the local box store down the street.

Also, anyone who is looking for a high MP camera in a phone is not going to be a mindless dolt walking around in circles since he could not find one at an AT&T store. They will more than likely be researching their needs online.

It comes across as if you take personal offense to the types of phones that interest you not being subsidized by AT&T.

But really, to suggest that a business should not carry ANY products since they don't have the products you want is only good for a chuckle.

That is like telling a retail clothing store that sells mid-range priced clothes they shou...

First, this thread is getting away from the point a bit.

Second, at&t offers a lot of great things thanks to their phone distribution. For instance, XBM(exchange by mail). If you buy your phone from Ebay or a Manufacturer direct, you get to deal with the Manufacturers warranty. That means mailing your device in(you pay for postage), waiting for them to fix it, then waiting to receive it. XBM has a two day turn around. The last customer I talked to that bought a V3 on Ebay said Motorola had a three week turn around. He bought a new device when it started acting up again rather than go through the Manufacturer's warranty process again.

Have fun shopping outside of the at&t selection.

SE has a 5mp phone that is quad band, and dual band as in 850/1900 3G but ATT still passed up on it!!!!

I have more faith in ATT's data network than I do them putting out a quality camera phone.

Thus is the reason I haven't been under a contract for 3yrs, and why I buy my phones on ebay.

That is exactly what alot of folks are doing, (Buying their phones unlocked to get a wider variety).

I myself love my unlocked K850 (SE). It is quite remarkable, and I am probably going to get a P1 or an N73 this christmas for family members.

These type of phones benift ANY consumer who pays 100 dollars a month on a bill because the consumer can get WAY more out of the phone.

AT&T Phones comming out that I am looking forward to:

- Nokia 6550- Symbian Software, oh yea, this phone will rock!

- Nokia E71- This will be a true PDA that will compete with the giants. Any real mobile phone student knows that this phone will put many flashy PDA's to shame. This phone features Flash Media player, which is awesome.

Wow, I didn't know the E71 has a flash media player, oooh, ah, wow!!!!

Personally, I have the N95-3, I've owned it since December last year, and am very, very happy with it, talk, mostly internet, but I listen to some music, I pack an 8GB card in mine.

I just noticed that 8gig microsd cards are ---ONLY--- $26 on ebay, I was like WOW, 8gigs for a measly $26, I paid frinkin $65 for mine back in June of this year.

Well, since I have Skyfire loaded on my N95 then I don't really need to worry about my native browser, besides I am so, so, so frinkin sick of this "web connection timed out" CRAP I constantly get from my N95's native browser.

More than 3 quarters of my browsing is with Opera Mini, Skyfire is way cool, but uses way too much battery!!!!

But I am looking forward to the next Beta coming out for Symbian.

Does Skyfire support flash? I didn't think it did. There is supposed development for the Blackberry so I would assume against it being flash capable.

That aside, it is a nice looking browser. Can't you get Opera Mobile for you symbian instead of Opera Mini, or was that WinMo only?

Skyfire supports just about everything. Yes to flash. I honestly don't know if I can get Opera Mobile on my Symbian phone, what are the benefits of Opera Mobile over Opera Mini??? Don't you have to $pay$ for Opera Mobile? I'd like to have a web browser that I can make folders for my favorite websites, like a Mobile folder for Phone Scoop, Boy Genius Report, an so on.

Jay:

I suggest you go take an economics course at a local community college and learn about supply & demand. There is simply NOT an adequate demand for the phones you are seeking to justify carrying them at subsidized prices. The market does not demand high quality phones, it wants inexpensive subsidized phones. The small market demand for high-end phones is met by direct sales from manufacturers and through other alternative suppliers - which has the advantage of no contract activation as you have found. Live with it, and enjoy it!
