you can look back at year over year earnings and add 41 billion for at&t wireless, 16 billion for at&t and 67 billion for bellsouth, I'd say they are still paying for mergers...

Don't forget Verizon is positioning itself to take Alltel as well at a significant cost. And for how much did it agree to purchase all that spectrum coverage recently?
All companies must spend money to make money: long term investments, asset aquisition, whatever you call it.
If anyone is worried the initial investment in the iPhone is going to prevent AT&T from expanding and improving coverage, I would be inclined to believe they don't really have a grasp on how things work.

Dude your the one with no brain... You don't think at&t has a thing called a budget??? They don't take all of their yearly profits and put every dime toward paying off the merger. They budget out for merger payoff as well as expanding the network, and well as technology enhancement. They are a multi billion dollar company, I'm sure there is someone in the company that is smarter then you buddy.

Plus iPhone users are more likely to add additional text packages as well - meaning even more monthly revenue down the line. A hit up front - but definitely worth it in the long run.
